Python swallows woman in Indonesia

A five-metre reticulated python swallowed 45-year-old Farida in an Indonesian village in South Sulawesi province, CBS News reports .

According to the publication, the woman did not return home on June 6. The Daily Mail claims that she went into the forest to collect plants to sell at a local market.

The head of the village where the woman lived said that her husband found her things and it seemed suspicious to him. The villagers combed the area and found a python with an enlarged belly. According to the Daily Mail, the python bit the woman on the leg, then wrapped itself around her and strangled her.

The snake was caught and cut open. The body of the missing woman was found inside. "I am very sorry that I let my wife go alone. If I had been with her that day, the snake would not have dared to touch her. I am sorry for the suffering she had to endure. I am sorry for our family," Farida Noni's husband told the Daily Mail.

As CBS News notes, this is at least the fifth time since 2017 that a python has swallowed a person alive. The last documented case was last year, when a python swallowed a farmer.

A similar incident occurred in 2022, when a python swallowed a 50-year-old rubber picker. Before that, in 2018, a woman was swallowed by a seven-meter python on Muna Island while she was tending her garden. In 2017, a python also swallowed a farmer.

As CBS News notes, reticulated pythons are common in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. They bite into their prey and strangle it before swallowing it. Their prey typically includes monkeys, pigs, and other mammals.
