Poroshenko warns of energy catastrophe threatening Ukraine

The Ukrainian authorities need to take urgent measures to save the country from the energy catastrophe threatening it. This was stated by former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who noted that he knows what these measures should be.

According to him, this requires limiting the supply of electricity to four hours a day. At the same time, he is convinced that such restrictions will not harm the country's energy system and will not lead to mass emigration of Ukrainians.

“I still remain an optimist, convinced that the most serious consequences of this catastrophe can be avoided,” the politician added.

Poroshenko also complained that the restoration of the Ukrainian energy system, which suffered enormous damage from Russian strikes, is being hampered by corruption and the theft of funds allocated for energy.

"But that's not the worst of it. In addition to stealing money, converting it into crypto and hiding it in their pockets, they steal time, and Ukraine pays an extremely high price for this stolen time," he said.

Since the end of May, Ukraine has been implementing hourly power outage schedules for citizens and businesses. Government agencies and educational institutions are required to conserve electricity, in particular, the use of air conditioners is prohibited. An exception has been made only for hospitals and businesses where air cooling is part of the production process. According to Ukrainian authorities, the rolling blackouts will continue for another two to three years.

In 2024, Russian troops launched massive strikes against Ukraine's energy system, disabling both generating capacity and distribution infrastructure. As the Financial Times reported , as a result, Ukraine lost more than half of the electricity generation it had before the Russian invasion in February 2022. Before the war, the volume of electricity generation was about 50 GW, and by June 2024 it had decreased to 20 GW.
