Putin named 200 thousand rubles a month as the salary of most Russians

Vladimir Putin believes that most Russians earn 200 thousand rubles a month. He said this while speaking at a meeting with local specialists during his first trip to Yakutsk in 10 years.

“2.4 million rubles a year is the income of the majority of citizens of the Russian Federation,” TASS quotes Putin as saying.

Putin added that this is why the government chose the threshold of 2.4 million in annual income for the increase in personal income tax, which will take place in 2025.

“According to the Finance Ministry’s calculations, the increase in personal income tax – the tax burden on citizens – will affect no more than 3.2% of taxpayers,” Putin said.

According to Rosstat, in 2023, the median salary in Russia was 46.7 thousand rubles. This means that half of Russians receive less than this amount. The average salary last year was 75 thousand rubles.

The figure of 200 thousand rubles is most often mentioned in conversations about monthly payments to Russian soldiers. According to Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, participants in the war in Ukraine receive at least 200 thousand rubles a month. Vladimir Putin also spoke about this.

"A person who fights has the right not only to a salary, but also to a monetary allowance. The payment is quite decent, taking into account the average income in the country - 200 thousand or more rubles per month," Putin said, speaking to students in St. Petersburg in January of this year. In some regions, authorities are offering one-time payments of one million rubles to those who sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense and go to fight in Ukraine.
