Terrorist attack in Dagestan kills 15 security forces and several civilians

As a result of a series of attacks in Dagestan, at least 15 security forces and several civilians were killed, including the rector of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in Derbent, Archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov. This was reported on his Telegram channel by the head of the republic, Sergei Melikov.

"More than 15 police officers became victims of today's terrorist attack, while taking up arms to defend the peace and quiet of Dagestan. <...> A decision has been made to provide mandatory financial assistance to all [relatives] of the dead and injured, both police officers and civilians," the head of the republic added," the head of the region said in a published video address.

He did not specify how many civilians fell victim to the attack. According to Melikov, security forces killed six attackers.

On the evening of June 23, unknown persons fired at a traffic police post in Makhachkala, as well as an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent. Another shootout with their participation took place in the village of Sergokala, which is located not far from Derbent.

As Interfax reports, three of the attackers were later identified . They turned out to be the sons and nephew of the head of the republic's Sergokalinsky district, Magomed Omarov. The latter was detained by local security forces, and several hours later it became known that he had been expelled from United Russia for "discrediting actions."

According to the latest information, 16 people were injured and hospitalized as a result of the attack - three civilians and 13 police officers. The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Dagestan opened a criminal case on the terrorist attack (Article 205 of the Criminal Code). The regional authorities declared a three-day mourning in the republic.
