Extreme heat hits US

The US heat wave has affected at least 100 million people, with temperatures in some cities exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend. Forecasters are predicting that hot weather will continue across much of the southeast and southwest of the country this week, Reuters reports .

The intense heat will move into Nebraska and Kansas on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Philadelphia is expected to reach 106 degrees, but the humidity will make it feel even warmer. Some cities are expected to top 110 degrees.

Last Sunday, the temperature in Palm Springs, California, reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit, while in Las Vegas it was 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Boston, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Chicago all broke temperature records.

Heat waves have caused a dust storm and two wildfires in New Mexico. The Biden administration declared a state of emergency last week over the wildfires in the country.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2024 has already entered the top five hottest years on record and is on track to become the hottest year on record.

Extreme heat has already caused hundreds of deaths in Asia and Europe. More than 1,300 people died during the Hajj to Mecca alone. Temperatures there reached 47 degrees Celsius. Unregistered pilgrims who did not have visas reportedly died mainly due to lack of access to water and air conditioning.
