The Russian satellite "Resource P" collapsed into more than 100 fragments near the International Space Station, according to the space command of the US Armed Forces and NASA .
“The space command may confirm the destruction of the Russian apparatus“ resource P1 ”, this happened in a low near-Earth orbit on June 26,” the press release of the department says.
There are no details about what caused the destruction of the Russian satellite. Since the incident occurred near the ISS, the astronauts who were there had to hide in their spacecraft for about an hour, the NASA press service said.
The American military clarified that at the moment the fragments of the satellite are not threatened. The Russian authorities have not yet commented on what happened.
