Record heat to hit Moscow

Moscow is expecting an abnormal increase in temperature - in July the air may warm up to 34 degrees Celsius, RIA Novosti reports, citing weather forecasters. According to experts, such heat has not been seen in early July for the last hundred years.

As noted by the leading specialist of the Phobos weather center, Evgeny Tishkovets, the air temperature could rise to 32 degrees over the weekend.

"On Monday, the peak heat may reach +30-33 degrees, beating the 1898 record of +32.6. On Tuesday, it may be one degree hotter, up to +31-34, and this day is also a contender for a record, surpassing the 1890 record of +31.9. Showers with thunderstorms are expected by Wednesday evening, while the daytime temperature will remain at its peak of +30-33 degrees. It may also beat the 1917 record of +32.2," he explained.

Tishkovets also added that during the day ultraviolet radiation levels can reach dangerous levels – about 6-7 units – so Muscovites need to spend less time in the sun.

Due to such heat, as Tishkovets notes, Moscow will experience tropical nights. This is a phenomenon in which the air temperature is much higher than the average night mark. According to the weather forecaster, at least +15-20 degrees are expected at night in July.

In turn, the chief specialist of the Moscow meteorological bureau, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, noted that even if the air temperature in the first days of July does not reach such record values, it will still be the highest in the last 90 years.

“So far, the year 1999 holds the palm of 20th century primacy, when it was +31 in Moscow, at VDNKh. It is obvious that Muscovites cannot avoid the heat,” she noted.

A significant increase in air temperature is also expected in the EU countries. Meteorologists interviewed by Bloomberg note that July will be the peak of heat in Greece, Spain and Italy, and 2024 could be the hottest year in the history of meteorological observations.
