A case has been opened against historian, blogger and teacher Tamara Eidelman for the rehabilitation of Nazism on the Internet (Part 4 of Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code). This was reported on the Telegram channel of the Moscow prosecutor's office, which had previously launched an investigation into Eidelman.
It is reported that the investigation of the criminal case is “under the control of the prosecutor’s office.”
On June 21, the capital's prosecutor's office announced that it had "found violations of criminal law requirements in the actions of a number of individuals": in addition to Eidelman, the post mentioned singer Monetochka (Elizaveta Gyrdymova) and actress Yana Troyanova. In particular, the security forces then reported that they had found "statements expressing obvious disrespect for the day of military glory of Russia and a memorable date in Russia associated with the defense of the Fatherland, as well as insulting the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland" in one of the videos on Eidelman's YouTube channel. The department did not specify what content formed the basis of the criminal case; perhaps they were talking about one of the videos in which the teacher talked about May 9.
Tamara Eidelman is a former teacher and head of the history department at Moscow School No. 67; she was awarded the title of Honored Teacher of Russia in 2003. After the full-scale invasion began, Eidelman emigrated from Russia. She runs her own YouTube channel and hosts events in various countries.
In September 2022, the Ministry of Justice added Eidelman to the register of “foreign agents”, after which she was fined three times under the article on the absence of “foreign agent” marking (Part 4 of Article 19.34 of the Code of Administrative Offenses).
After the war with Ukraine began, the number of cases under the article on the rehabilitation of Nazism (Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code) increased sharply - presumably, the security forces are using this article to put pressure on those who could potentially oppose the "special operation" in Ukraine and its "denazification". According to the SOVA Research Center, many cases under Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code are initiated unlawfully and should be classified under other articles of the Criminal Code or resolved within the framework of civil, not criminal proceedings.
