Investigative Committee names smoking as cause of fire in Balashikha dormitory with five dead

The Investigative Committee named careless handling of fire while smoking as the preliminary cause of the fire in a dormitory in Balashikha, which killed five people. The post was published on the agency's Telegram channel.

The cause of death of five people, including four women, was named as poisoning by combustion products. The Investigative Committee opened a case on causing death by negligence (Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code). The department's employees are studying the documentation that was seized from the owner of the hostel.

A building in Balashikha, Moscow Region, caught fire on the night of June 29. Rescuers were able to evacuate eight people, including two children. The fire covered an area of ​​40 square meters.

A TASS source claims that the building had no fire extinguishing system. According to him, the building was commissioned in 1949. The agency's source added that by 2016 it was 63% worn out.

On June 24, a fire of over five thousand square meters occurred in the building of the Platan Research Institute in Fryazino, Moscow Region. As a result, six people died , some of whom jumped out of windows while trying to escape the fire. The Investigative Committee named the cause of death in the fire as "violation of fire safety requirements in terms of the lack of alarm, notification, fire extinguishing systems, as well as blocking of fire exits."

The first suspects were detained in the case of the fire on June 26. They were charged with providing unsafe services that resulted in the death of people (Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code). On June 29, the court placed the owner of the building where the fire occurred under house arrest. Her name was not given.
