Second Russian Dies of Botulism

A patient with botulism has died in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This is the second fatal case after a recent outbreak of the disease, RIA Novosti and Interfax report, citing the regional health ministry.

"The death was caused by a number of reasons, including botulism, but this infection was not the primary cause," the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Mash adds that the deceased was 24 years old. The Telegram channel writes that the young man ate a salad with canned beans, and after the poisoning, his chronic disease worsened.

The first death of a patient with botulism was reported on June 24. A 21-year-old resident of Kostroma died in the hospital. As reported, he became infected in Nizhny Novgorod, where he came to visit relatives, and did not immediately seek medical help.

An outbreak of botulism occurred in Russian cities in mid-June. In total, more than 300 people ended up in hospitals. All of them ate ready-made salads produced by the food delivery service "Kukhnya na rayone" and the company "Gastroport". By the end of June, according to the Ministry of Health, 232 people were discharged from hospitals, and another 148 are continuing treatment.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements. "Kitchen on the District" suspended operations. The company's CEO Anton Lozin, the CEO of OOO "SAVON-K" Anatoly Shin and the head of the quality department of Local Kitchen Elena Mashkova were placed under house arrest. The only person arrested in this case was the chef of the company "SAVON-K" Karim Normatov.
