Kolt continues the project“In separation” - about who we became after the start of the war, wherever we are geographically.
Explaining our intentions, the editors have repeatedly said that she did not want to fit into a formally cooled, but far from permitted, extremely destructive public conflict between the “left” and “remaining”.
But what is its nature, can it be, yes, logically explained, but still by a great collective error? Why do we, people, generally surrendered such awkward, massive constructs? And what does the personal picture of the world, on which the participants of the eternal “srach” are based on social networks - or, on the contrary, people who are fundamentally abstained by?
About this, at the request of the editor with the invited researcher of the University of Manchester, the sociologist Alexei Titkov said Dmitry Bezuglov.
Since the beginning of the war, Titkov has been conducting its project Seeing Like , where he analyzes the mechanisms of fierce public discussions, which was faced with society since February 2022.
By the way, we recall: we announced Open Coll. If you have diaries and other personal testimonies of wartime, send them to colta.pr@gmail.com . We read, answer and publish the most valuable.
And finally, the most important.

- Alexey Sergeevich, let's start with the most common. Is the name of your cycle a reference to James Scott, the author of the book "Seeing Like a State" ? Or do you just like the design itself - "see how"?
- Like the design. I like the task that anthropologists professionally solve, like the same Scott, in which I always envied them. To explain how something strange, shocking, which we see in others, ultimately do people exactly the same as us.
Everyone probably remembers the spring of 2022, when many suddenly discovered that their friends, colleagues, neighbors, it turns out, see reality not the case, their good and evil are not like yours. Then the instructions became popular on how to communicate with these "not like that." Some instructions resembled manuals how to argue the opponent, others - tips on how to handle patients. The instructions were called somehow like "how to talk with victims of propaganda." It was difficult to resist and not offer your own option: “The first rule: not to consider the interlocutor“ a victim of propaganda ”. Just a person with other views. "
“See how” for me the continuation of the same rule that is easiest to determine through two negations. Understanding does not mean approving, you can understand and stay with the previous disagreements. And explaining does not mean exposing or making a diagnosis.
- Why did you decide to make this cycle at all?
- I didn’t solve it, just for the plots that are interesting to me, one day I suddenly found the Seeing Like heading. With the name, numbering and marks, it began to look like a cycle.
First of all, to any cycles, I opened a way for myself how to cope with something that hurts you. To make an breath and say to yourself: "It seems that this is an interesting research question." Turn on the logic, knowledge and try to understand why this is so. I don’t even know when it became a habit. Probably the fact that the previous eight years (those who were “where were you, why were you silent?”) Drunk a lot in the history of May 2 in Odessa, and there are sensitive plots, as they say, above the roof. Skills, how to handle such things, do not want to, but appear.
Another thing is useful is the teacher’s experience, the habit of explaining by examples. Work as work, and then once February-March 2022 comes. I well remember how you come to classes and see: the students are all in place, but, let's say, confused. I still need to tell you, according to the program, some framim-analysis of Snow and Benford or social performances. And suddenly it turns out that all this rhymes, resonates with something that excites right now. The usual “try to think according to such a scheme from the textbook” right there, before our eyes, it becomes almost useful.
It turns out, as I already understood now, something like a nesting doll: I tried it, tried to study, it remained to launch into the outside world. Show sociological models as instruments of self-help, something like a designer for everyday life.
- Then let me turn to this designer in action. One of your posts was dedicated to the "left-up." In it, you are talking about the production of classifications “from the outside” and “from the inside” and explain them by example from the “chestnut”: the carpenter firmly knows the border among themselves and the joiner, because he sees it “from the inside” of the profession, and some university scientist does not see this border, because he is “from the outside”.
- In the story about the “left” and “remaining” I missed how it all began. Who was the first to cough so unsuccessfully that the avalanche rolled ...
- It seems to me that there was an article on Villag, where the wording “The scorched Putinists Field” was sounded. And many people looked out the window, realized that they seemed to be not scorched, and it rushed.
- Yes, maybe. Further, at the mature stage, the impression was strange, probably not only mine. On the one hand, a dispute of such intensity that something important is probably solved in it. On the other hand, there was a feeling that the subject of the conversation seemed to slip away and that the marks “left” and “the remaining” are more confused than clarify. Ready intellectual mystery.
The initial question is: here is an array of texts in which people argue, it is necessary to find signs in this array by which the parties are actually different. Not external, as a place of residence, but sewn in the texts themselves. Once a guess came: a classification method. What is the idea in a nutshell. There is such a genre of memes, Country Balls , where there are charters painted in national colors. Now imagine that we are inside the ball “Russia” and we can see some details, internal dramas, which, when viewed from the outside, mean nothing. If we accept that the difference takes place between the positions “inside” and “outside”, for example, one of the popular topics will become more understandable: “Who wages the war - Putin or all Russian society?” A strange, it would seem, question, but encouraging to choose a scale: Russia is a single “ball” or it is necessary to distinguish more fractional types.
- I was delighted when I read the anti -receptor you proposed in the note “About Hope” . You propose to blind a lot of problems and allocate in them - “the more vague, the better” - the extremely general categories and speculative entities: “all Russian society”, “millennial slavery”, “Bacilli of the Imperial”, “Rashism”, “Sleep”, “Patriarchal Culture” ...
- If you remove the irony, the same question will remain: the definition of the situation, the coordinates in which we understand what is happening. The elementary plot of microsociology: how to agree on a definition of a situation in order to choose a method of action. And here is a fork: what scale to choose. We can say that the problem is the size of the whole country. You can offer a more compact scale. Only this choice, taking the rest of the brackets, gives us different tips, what to do and how.
If we take the whole Russia problem (because it, for example, is “infected with imperial fascism”), then everything is logical further: hope is only on the outside world that can restrain this threat, and then slowly re -educate the infected ones with an optimistic scenario. If you find problems of smaller dimension, the meaning and prospects of activism within the country will be visible.
You can check what positions diverge in the polls. In a first approximation, a group of “anti -war Russians” stands out, which on the standard question “Do you support a military operation?” They answer “no”, there are about 15–25%of them. If you ask further, separating topics are found inside this group: attitude to the country and the choice of a circle of communication.
The first line of the section was discovered by the study of Konstantin Aisenberg “Russians in the context of Svo” (May 2022). In it, a group of “disagreements” shared - in proportion two to one - on “internal emigrants” (smaller part) and a position that is called “everything is bad, but this is my country”. This difference was manifested in relation to people to install "Is it important for me to feel part of Russia?" Most of the “disagreed” answer “yes, important”, in “internal emigrants” - “no”.
Another can be withdrawn from surveys of the Social Research Fund (Samara). People were asked not only about the position, but also about the circle of their friends, acquaintances and colleagues. It turned out that the anti -war 20% shared almost equally to people living in the environment of those who think in the same way as they, that is, the same “disagreed”, and people who have a more mixed circle of communication. The option when there are solid “zetniks” around, turned out to be the rarest, within the statistical error. My interpretation of these data is that the circle of communication is primarily the result of our choice. You can close in a circle of like -minded people, you can communicate with different people. Similarly, such topics - attitude to the country and “with whom to communicate” - became a significant bet in the very dispute of the “left” and “remaining”.
- You analyze how people, depending on the chosen positions, begin to interpret the news and wind up a new meaning on them. For example, you wrote about the raccoon , which was taken from the Kherson zoo to the Crimea: “It is unlikely that the raccoon himself experienced his crossing as violently as the human public in social networks. And he hardly wanted to take revenge for himself with shooting from a 82 mm mortar - this was already added by the human team. ”
-A raccoon is a Ukrainian plot, but we also know how to seal and hate because of small fluffs. The storm around the Kot of Twix , which was planted from the train, was as impressive. And, as in a plot with a raccoon, the team turns an everyday episode into a drama of good and evil. An ordinary cat becomes perfect, the usual conductor turns into a sample of cruelty.
- And the private security guard, transporting raccoon to Crimea, became in collective retelling to the military ...
- Yes, the history is finalized by the whole team to cause the maximum of emotions in the largest number of people. Such a problem is solved by collective selection. The group members offer their versions, others pick them up or not.
- Do I correctly understand that there are consolidated groups that use social networks only to clarify the picture of the world that has already existed? And “left”/“remaining” - only a private conversation within a large and constant process? We go to Facebook in order to quickly distinguish good from evil, those from these, to cheat and scatter. Or am I simplifying?
- Reply “yes” or “no” is easiest. It is more interesting to understand how such a process happens as it affects us and we - on it. Sociologist John Luo explains about such a dynamics, referring to two, seemingly different examples: a prayer collection of Quakers and physics on accelerator-synchrotron. Physicists peer into the testimony of devices, quakers silently listen to themselves. The task in both cases is similar: to distinguish a useful signal from noise. At some point, Quaker or the physicist feels that, it seems, something worthwhile has come, and shares with his colleagues. Others decide whether to support or not. In a successful case, a resonance arises, a collective conviction that the decision is correct. Our social networks, if John La continued, work according to the same principle: they are our synchrotron, and we are in it as experimental physicists.
© Ksenia Leonova- You wrote about the fact that social networks are a constantly seething ritual. Here I hung a little, because, as far as I remember, Durkheim works as follows: there is a group that in order to feel the greatest connectedness within itself, conducts the ritual. People feel: we got closer - and go further to live our life. You say about social networks that they are seething constantly. But how is it possible?
- The answer to "How is it possible?" older than social networks, about a century. The theory of the ritual created by Durkheim had a predecessor and had an opponent. The predecessor was an exciting theme of the late 19th century - the psychology of the crowd. Durkheim retained her initial guess: people, gathered together, begin to behave as usual, experience emotions that are unthinkable in everyday life. The news was that Durkheim was not interested in the danger of collective emotions, but their positive effects.
Another part of the story is that Durkheim was not a lonely creator, but rather a character of a drama, similar to the “two theologians” of Borges. Nearby was Gabrielle Tard, his intellectual double, who interpreted all important topics outrageously in his own way. In relation to the psychology of the crowd, Tardus also offered a completely different plot turn. Crowds, Tardus said, go into the past, a new era of the public begins: people united by the fact that they read the same news. The strength of the crowd is limited in time, the crowd will sooner or later disperse and risks no longer gather. The audience can exist much longer than the crowd, in terms of number it can also be much larger.
Social networks are still the same Tarda public in the new packaging. Technically, you can boil constantly, around the clock. The restriction is now different: every reason for collective drilling is not infinite, at some point we are “pronouncing” and getting tired. Strong ritual emotions according to Durkheim arise due to the synchronism of our reactions. Varramung in the ritual of Corobori perform one common dance, people in social networks write, without saying a word, similar thoughts because of the same event. The difference is that Varramung, when they finish the ritual dance, diverge and perform the same in a year. The group in social networks in order to maintain a degree of emotions, you need to find something new. What will be the next reason-a rocket that fell into a residential building, or someone’s phrase live-for collective dynamics, strictly speaking, no matter.
At this moment, our ritual sites await risk, also long predicted. Half a century ago, at the turn of the sixties and seventies, the anthropologist Mary Douglas studied how the ideas about good and evil are formed depending on the type of organization. She called us the type of “enclave”, its characteristic features - mutual horizontal control and the clear boundary of “my/strangers”. One to one as political camps on social networks. It is difficult to maintain stability to such groups, as Douglas shows. Mutual horizontal control at any moment can turn into mutual accusations of betrayal, which then move, depending on the ratio of forces, to the grass of the disagreed or into the split of the group.
The initial impulse, causing such a dynamics, maybe, in principle, whatever, this is not necessarily something serious by the standards of the outside world. Ukrainian social networks a year ago shared and quarreled because of a completely episodic story in Hurghada, where a Russian citizen died on vacation due to the Akula attack. Is it possible to joke over such cases - suddenly it turned out to be a question that everyone needs to decide. Russian disputes after the film about the nineties - completely fresh, can not be reminded. The same dispute between the "left" and "remaining", which also began with something small. They threw a pebble - and rolled.
- So far, we talked about “social media” in general, but they are different. There is Facebook where they argue all the time. There is a telegram where amazing expertise is produced: you started a channel, you already put yourself in an expert position and then serialize your thought. Have you thought about how different types of networks determine both the audience and its “seething”?
- The media is different, but everything is connected, all permeable to each other. The plots freely move from the platform to the platform. Facebook, YouTube , former Twitter, television talk shows-everyone looks at each other, tell their audience what is happening at other sites. Such an environment, it seems to me, can be understood as "social media in general."
It is on this scale that the problem is visible, which is called “echocamers” in media studies. In a transparent digital environment, where everything is encountered and mixed with everything, for some reason fanatical enclaves of like-minded people are formed. How do they, ask, survive, support their stability?
In the early 2010s, a hypothesis of the “filter bubble” appeared, saying that people have nothing to do with it, the whole thing is in the search algorithms that feed us only information, which, according to their calculations, should like it. So we get into an invisible cocoon. Beautiful and scary, but it seems not confirmed. Most likely, we create “bubbles” ourselves.
I have a complete recipe for creating a working “echocamer”, but collective emotions in it are one of the important components. Anger or ridicule, which is subjected to opponents, something stupid or disgusting. Fragments of a television broadcast with Solovyov, poems of Z -poets, something from the telegram of the Duma deputies -this type of small fragments of the statements “from there”, which convey to each other as a chain to divide the same feelings as it is ridiculous or vile.
On other sites with other views, the mechanism is similar.
