Trade turnover between Russia and the USA has increased by one and a half times

The volume of trade turnover between Russia and the United States in May 2024 amounted to 487 million dollars. This is reported by RIA Novosti, citing its own analysis of official American statistics. The agency notes that this is a record figure since May 2023, and compared to April, the growth was 47%.

Thus, Russia exported goods to the United States for a total of 439 million dollars. About half of this amount - 209.5 million dollars - was accounted for by purchases of uranium. The United States also imported fertilizers from Russia for 99.5 million dollars, platinum - for 88.9 million dollars. In addition, RIA Novosti notes, the United States increased purchases of Russian plywood fivefold, purchasing it for 11.6 million dollars, and also for the first time since January purchased ferroalloys for 10.7 million dollars.

In turn, the volume of American exports to Russia in May increased by 41%, amounting to 48 million dollars. The main item of purchases was vaccines, the volume of their import increased two and a half times and amounted to 15.6 million dollars. In addition, in May, Russia purchased food products from the United States for 6.9 million dollars, medical devices for four million dollars, as well as medicines and cellulose, spending 1.9 million dollars on each.

In May of this year, the US government passed a law banning the import of low-enriched uranium produced by Russia or a Russian organization. At the time, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan claimed that the new law would help reduce the US's dependence on Russia for nuclear energy, which, he said, would contribute to economic stability in the country. At the same time, the law stipulates that the Department of Energy can make exceptions until 2028 if the US does not find other sources for purchasing uranium.

In response, Russian government officials warned that the ban would cause the United States major financial losses and the failure of “green projects.”
