The UN Security Council has scheduled a meeting for the morning of July 9 in connection with the Russian attack on Kiev, Reuters reports , citing diplomats.
The meeting was requested by the United States, Great Britain, France, Slovenia and Ecuador. The UK's permanent representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, wrote that "we condemn Russia's cowardly attack" on the hospital in Kiev.
The Russian strike was also condemned by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who called the attack on a children's hospital and a medical centre in another part of Kyiv "particularly shocking".
The European Union responded to the Russian attack by saying that hospitals enjoy special protection under international humanitarian law. "By attacking Okhmatdet, a symbol of Ukrainian children's medicine and childhood cancer treatment, and by attacking children who are the most vulnerable, Russia once again demonstrates its cruelty and its complete insincerity regarding peace and peace negotiations," the statement said .
First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky stated that at the meeting the Russian side plans to “familiarize colleagues with facts that absolutely do not confirm the Ukrainian and Western version of this incident.”
