At least one person has been killed in shelling in Ukraine over the past 24 hours, and 35 civilians have been wounded. The Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Nikolaev, Sumy and Poltava regions of Ukraine, as well as Kyiv, have been hit, the administrations of these regions reported today.

The Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk regions of Russia, the occupied parts of the Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions and Crimea also came under fire - two people were killed there and 21 more were injured.

Ukraine

At least one civilian was killed and three more people were injured as a result of Russian strikes in the Kharkiv region in the last 24 hours, the head of the military administration Oleg Sinegubov reported .

At least 19 civilians from the Donetsk region were injured due to Russian shelling of the region in a day, its head Vadim Filashkin reported .

At least six civilians were wounded after attacks in the Kherson region in a day, the head of the region, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported .

At least three civilians, including two children, were injured in the Russian strike on the Zaporizhia region, said the head of the local military administration, Ivan Fedorov.

Also, at least two people were injured due to Russian shelling in the Dnepropetrovsk region, said the head of the military administration of the region, Sergei Lysak.

One more person was injured as a result of shelling in Sumy and Luhansk regions.

Residential areas of the Nikolaev and Poltava regions and Kiev also came under fire in the last 24 hours, but there were no casualties there.

Russia and the occupied territories

In the Belgorod region, two people were killed in a day of Ukrainian shelling - a husband and wife, at least five more civilians were injured, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported .

The Kursk region also came under fire, where eight civilians were injured by Ukrainian air strikes, said acting head of the region Alexey Smirnov. Another civilian was injured in the Bryansk region, said head of the region Alexander Bogomaz.

At least seven people were injured in the occupied territories of Donetsk Oblast due to attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in one day, the Russian-appointed authorities of the region reported . Russian authorities in the occupied part of Zaporizhia Oblast also reported shelling.

The Ministry of Defense reported on the downing of drones and the destruction of sea drones that attacked occupied Crimea.

The Russian-appointed head of the occupied part of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo , reported on the number of victims of shelling on July 16 and the night of July 17: one person died and eight were injured.

Shelling of Ukraine, occupied Ukrainian territories and Russia

• Mutual shelling of populated areas has accompanied the entire war in Donbass, which began in mid-April 2014 with the capture of the city of Slavyansk in the Donetsk region by Russian militants and the proclamation of the LPR and DPR The administrations of these state entities are controlled by the Russian authorities and, in our opinion, are occupational. In 2022, they were incorporated into Russia along with the occupied parts of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine. . Later, Russian military personnel also participated in the conflict. And not only in the territory of Donbass: they shelled Ukrainian settlements from Russian territory.

• According to the UN, in 2014–2021, 3,106 civilians were killed on both sides of the front, including 1,852 men, 1,072 women, and 182 children. More than 7,000 people were injured.According to the Ukrainian authorities, 1.6 million people became refugees on both sides of the front.

• From March 21, 2014 until spring 2022, the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine worked in the conflict zone, recording, among other things, civilian casualties. The observers were present both in the territories controlled by Ukraine and in the territories controlled by the occupation administrations of the LPR and DPR.

• In 2021, the number of civilian casualties in the conflict was at a record low, with 25 people killed, according to the UN .

  Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, shelling of populated areas, primarily from Russia, has increased significantly. According to UN estimates , as of the end of 2023, the number of civilian casualties in the Russian-Ukrainian war exceeded ten thousand people; the real figure may be much higher, since counting casualties in cities where active hostilities took place is very difficult.

  Most civilian deaths during a full-scale war are victims of Russian shelling and ground operations. For example, from August to October 2023, 86% of civilian casualties of the war were recorded in territory controlled by Ukraine. At the same time, half of the total number of victims during this period died far from the front line - from rocket attacks or drone attacks.

  Shelling of populated areas in the territories occupied by Russia has also increased since 2022. For example, the occupation administration of the LPR stated that more than 900 people died in the first year of a full-scale war in the territory it controls.

  Almost from the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia's border regions began to be shelled. In May 2022, as a result of shelling of the village of Solokhi in the Belgorod region, a Russian civilian was killed for the first time in this war, and seven more people were wounded.
