The first verdict in the “Baimak case” was handed down in the Orenburg region

A court in Orsk, Orenburg Region, sentenced 50-year-old Ilshat Ulyabaev, a defendant in the "Baimak case," to five years in prison. He was found guilty of participating in mass riots Article 212 of the Criminal Code and its application Article 381 of the Criminal Code of violence against a representative of the authorities. This is the first sentence in the "Baimak case", which was opened after mass protests in support of environmental activist Fail Alsynov in Bashkortostan.

The trial of Ulyabaev, like that of a number of other defendants in the case, took place outside of Bashkortostan. Ten people are being tried in Izhevsk, five in Tolyatti, and one in Orenburg. The transfer of trials outside the region where mass protests took place that led to the prosecution may be due to fears that local residents will take to the streets again.

The Baimak Case

• The publication "Aspects" counted more than 80 people detained in the Baymak case. Two of those detained, Rifat Dautov and Miniyar Bayguskarov, died, and Dim Davletkildin was severely beaten during the arrest.

• On January 17, 2024, the Baimak District Court sentenced Bashkort activist and former leader of the Bashkort organization Fail Alsynov to four years in prison. Thousands of his supporters gathered outside the court to support Alsynov during the hearings.

• Alsynov was detained on October 12, 2023. Security forces searched his apartment in Ufa and his parents' house in the village of Yuldybaevo. After investigative actions, he was released on bail. The prosecution requested four years in a penal colony.

• Alsynov is being prosecuted in connection with the case of initiation of Part 1 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation hatred due to his speech in April 2023 at a public gathering against gold mining companies in the Baimaksky District.

  According to the investigation, Alsynov “gave a speech in the Bashkort language, containing statements that negatively assessed groups of people… – “residents of the Caucasus,” “Central Asia,” “Armenians,” as well as humiliating their human dignity.”

  According to the translation , the activist also spoke about the oppression of the Bashkort people. "Our guys go and die in war for someone, but here there are not even men left to defend their land," he said. The criminal case was opened based on a denunciation by the head of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov.

• In December 2022, the Kirov District Court of Ufa fined Alsynov ten thousand rubles under the article on incitement of hatred or enmity. The reason was his appeal to the Bashkort people, published on social networks. In it, Alsynov called the mobilization "genocide of the Bashkort people" and said that Russia's war against Ukraine is not a Bashkorto war.

• The Bashkort organization existed in 2014–2020 and advocated for the sovereignty of Bashkortostan, as well as in support of the Bashkort language and culture. In May 2020, the Supreme Court of Bashkortostan recognized it as extremist, after which it ceased to exist.
