The European Parliament has approved Ursula von der Leyen of the conservative European People's Party for a second term as head of the European Commission. 401 MEPs voted in favour of her candidacy, with the threshold being 361 votes. Another 284 MEPs voted against, with 15 abstaining.
On the eve of von der Leyen's candidacy, the European General Court partially upheld a claim by a Green MEP against the European Commission led by von der Leyen. The court found it unlawful that the commission, in response to a request from the Greens, had provided only partial access to contracts for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.
The commission, in turn, argued that it excluded some information about suppliers and the officials who negotiated with them out of concern for the corporations' commercial privacy interests.
In response to the court's ruling, a group of 48 left-wing MEPs called for the vote on von der Leyen's candidacy as European Commission president to be postponed until unredacted versions of the vaccine contracts are published.
