Since early July, students across Bangladesh have been protesting against a quota law that reserves 30% of public sector jobs for the heirs of veterans who fought for the country's independence in 1971. The protests in Bangladesh have left 12 people dead and more than 100 injured. At least four people have died in clashes with police, two of whom were students, the local newspaper Bangladesh Pratidin reports.

Protesters are demanding a change in the quota system so that hiring is based on the individual's qualifications. According to The Associated Press, at least 25 people have died since July 15. Bangladesh has closed public and private schools since July 17. Local outlet Prothom Alo reported that at least six people were killed in the Uttara area of ​​Dhaka alone in the latest clashes between protesters, security forces and ruling party activists. Thirteen more were killed in other parts of the capital.

Protesters also attacked the head office of state-run Bangladesh Television BTV, breaking through the main gate and setting fire to vehicles and the reception area.
