Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has called for a ceasefire during the Olympic Games. The Pope also called for a truce earlier

The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew made this statement during his sermon at the liturgy on the feast of Saint Paraskeva Friday.

“We take advantage of today’s opportunity of the official opening of the Olympic Games to add our voice to that of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Holy Brother of Rome, in support of the Olympic Truce, which since ancient times has been the obvious condition for holding the Olympic Games and has been observed by all as sacred and inviolable,” the Patriarch said.

He also added that he prayed that the Games would become "a starting point not only for a temporary ceasefire, but for the end of all bloody military conflicts, especially in long-suffering Ukraine and the Middle East."

On July 19, Pope Francis called for an Olympic Truce.

Let us recall that 51 Nobel laureates appealed to world religious leaders and secular authorities with a request to call for an unconditional ceasefire during the Olympic Games.
