A criminal case has been opened against a resident of Staraya Russa (Novgorod Region) under the article on damage to a memorial structure to participants in the Great Patriotic War (clause "b" of Part 2 of Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code) due to the burning of memorial wreaths in the Eternal Flame. This was reported by the local Investigative Committee, and Sever.Realii drew attention to the news.
According to the investigation, on the night of July 23, the man threw memorial wreaths into the Eternal Flame of the "Memorial Complex of Glory in honor of Soviet soldiers and partisans who died in battles with the Nazi invaders on the Staraya Russa land." It is specified that part of the memorial was damaged by fire.
The man was sent to a pretrial detention facility at the request of the Investigative Committee investigator.
