Seriously ill American Caroline Markle persuaded her husband Mil Markle to register on a dating site so that he would not be lonely after her death. The Guardian told the unusual story of how Mil met his future wife.
The publication writes that Carolyn and Mil got married two years after they met, in 1989. However, four years later, Mil noticed that his wife was "walking strangely." She also didn't notice when the traffic light turned green.
Carolyn was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. By 2009, her husband said, his world had "narrowed to work and caring for Carolyn," but he refused to think about his wife's death.
Carolyn first brought up the idea of Mil needing a new partner during a doctor's appointment in 2011. She returned to the topic several times over the following years, but Mil avoided the conversation.
At a doctor’s appointment in early 2019, Caroline said she wanted to stop treatment. “I sat there and listened quietly as she explained her decision. Then she said, ‘While we’re on the subject, I want Mil to find someone to be with when I die. And I’m going to be the one who chooses that,’” The Guardian quotes Mil as saying.
The woman helped her husband register on a dating site and fill out information about himself in his profile. However, the man did not tell about his wife and her illness in his profile.
For a while, Mil's communication on the dating site ended the moment he told about his situation. However, in late 2019, a girl named Jen wrote to him. Mil corresponded with the girl, and one day they called. After he told about his wife, she "suddenly asked for a phone" to talk to Jen. After that, Mil went on his first date with her.
Soon, Jen came home to Mil and Carolyn. “I was amazed to see that they had an instant connection. There was laughter and ease at dinner. We felt like family,” Mil said.
Two years after Carolyn's death in 2020, Mil and Jen got married. At their wedding, the couple remembered Carolyn, who Mil said "was a big part of this celebration." He added that he was grateful to his wife for taking care of him before she died. He said he was grieving but didn't feel alone because of Jen.
