Another athlete who failed gender test reaches Olympic quarterfinals of women's boxing tournament

Taiwanese athlete Lin Yuting, who was stripped of her bronze medal at the World Championships last year due to gender inconsistency, has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics. The results of the fight have been published on the official website of the 2024 Olympics.

On August 2, Lin Yuting met her opponent from Uzbekistan Sitora Turdibekova in the 1/8 finals of the Olympic boxing tournament in the weight category up to 57 kilograms. The fight ended with a score of 5:0.

The Telegraph writes that after the end of the competition the athletes did not shake hands.

"Turdubekova tried to shake hands with both of Yutin's coaches, who, unlike [Algerian athlete] Iman Khelif, did not try to console her opponent. Turdubekova left the ring in tears," the publication noted.

Lin Yuting's next fight will be on Sunday, when she will face Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria.

Olympic quarterfinalists Lin Yuting and Iman Khelif were at the center of controversy last year when they were disqualified from the World Boxing Championships for failing gender tests. Yuting was stripped of her bronze medal after she “failed to meet eligibility requirements based on a biochemical test.” Khelif was disqualified because “her elevated testosterone levels did not meet eligibility criteria.”

On August 2, Iman Khelif defeated Italian athlete Angela Carini. The latter stopped the fight at 46 seconds, calling it "unfair." Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke in support of Carini, saying that the fight should be held on equal terms.

Meloni believes that athletes who "possess male genetic characteristics" should not be allowed to compete in women's events. She says female athletes should be able to "compete on an equal footing."
