Experts from Transparency International Russia (in exile) have conducted a comprehensive analysis of illicit money transfers from Russia to the UK via electronic payments over the past decade, with a particular focus on the involvement of Russian citizens, including politically exposed persons (PEPs) and other influential individuals.
The study details the use of high-risk profiles and complex corporate structures to conceal large financial transactions. Particular attention is paid to the participation of PEP, as well as other high-ranking officials and businessmen. It is noted that schemes involving these individuals often involve shell companies and complex networks of offshore structures, which significantly complicates the detection and prevention of illegal transactions.
The report highlights the need to strengthen anti-money laundering measures and improve international cooperation to close loopholes that are used for illicit financial transactions. The study's findings point to the need for greater control and supervision of electronic payment systems, as well as the introduction of advanced technologies to monitor and identify suspicious activities. Particular attention is paid to the impact of these illegal transactions on the financial system and the need to strengthen measures to protect its integrity.
