Now, when I write this (Friday, ninth of August) Ukrainian troops continue to hold the territory in the Kursk region. By the time you read it, everything can swing in any direction. I can’t predict. Like I do not presume to evaluate the military aspect of what is happening - there are people who understand in military affairs. I want to say about the psychological and political causes and consequences of what happened.
The actions of the Armed Forces are said not only about their high professionalism, but also about the creativity of the Ukrainian leadership. They were able to go beyond the boundaries of the seemingly rigidly predetermined degrees of freedom. Someone said to them: “Why not?”, And they did what no one expected from them, completely changing the picture of the war. As the President of Zelensky rightly noted, the Ukrainian army knows how to surprise! After several months, a sluggish nightmare, when, despite the success in the attacks on the refineries, airfields and ships, the Ukrainians slowly retreated, the unpredictability of the war was demonstrated. It was demonstrated by the Ukrainians themselves, and their opponents, and their allies.
The courage of the Ukrainians was, however, the condition is necessary, but insufficient: everything worked only because the mentality of our bosses was added. Having untied the war, destroying people and cities, they, apparently, were completely sincerely in self-awareness: "And for what?" We can do anything on the territory of younger brothers - for their own benefit, of course. And they do not only have the right to ours, but do not dare. They will never attack, and therefore there is no need to think about preparing for defense. And talking about the need to cover the border is rather a request for successfully, presumably stolen money for the construction of protective structures. Fifteen billion rubles, they say.
The consequences of this action go far beyond the framework of purely military: this is a blow to the basic representations of a significant number of our fellow citizens.
The idea of the besieged fortress has always been popular in Russia: the army and the fleet are its only allies, and the Englishwoman shits. The Bolsheviks brought this idea to complete absurdity. The boundaries of the country (even it did not occur to them that they do not end anywhere) - this is what separates us, the kingdom of good, from the rest of the evil and hostile world, and therefore the boundaries are in constant danger and need protection. The border guard of Karatsupa and his dog Indian, a pioneer who found a foreign button and signaling the organs, like thousands of other heroes - all reflected the constant attacks of the enemy. And they flew the ground samurai, and it was not possible to take away the enemies from us that "that nobody would not take away." What, by the way, the contrast with American Frontiers - borders from which further advancement was carried out: both real, as during the development of the West, and metaphorical, under Kennedy, for example.

However, the authorities still failed to completely bring the population to madness. Yes, the enemies were all around - they believed it, but despite the fact that they shouted from each iron: “Europe always wanted to destroy us,” people did not expect attacks from there in recent years. In the nineties-just when NATO expanded-the focus group showed that people did not consider the western border any dangerous; The alarm, and also not very large, caused the south: China and Islamic countries.
But what succeeded was to convince the subjects that our borders are on the castle. The mouse will not slip, not to mention the enemy.
But it turned out - no. Evil Bandera went like a knife through oil. And as in the days of the rebellion of Prigozhin it suddenly turned out that various Russian Guards are fighting well only with peaceful demonstrators, but they don’t want to speak out against armed bandits, and now it turned out that the border guards are not able to withstand the real threat (and this is not their fault, they are intended for another), that the formidable Chechen troops were still overwhelmed with the enemy, otherwise, of course, they would, of course, they would, of course, they would They defeated, but did not happen, and most importantly, that our generals are much to attack foreign countries, but to defend their own.
When it reaches the bulk of the population, it is unknown. Although it will come. But the elite reached instantly. And this is another terrible failure of the leader, whose legitimacy is only and exclusively on the recognition of the upper ten thousand.
And this failure is realized in the world. Potential opponents begin to be less afraid. Potential allies - to think about whether they need such a partner?
So Putin must react. And just to tear off the head to the conditional Gerasimov and, according to tradition, will not be enough for a hundred opponents for a huge time.
The first step, of course, is the return of the territories. But Ukrainians are tactless people, they will not give good. We must fight. But we know how our generals do this: destroying all living things in the "liberated" cities and comparing them to the ground. That is, the leader will have to completely destroy several settlements - now in Russia. Moreover, probably, along with the people left there. And I think many will remain. The state of emergency, like partial evacuation, was declared late, the conditions at the temporary placement points are terrible, and ten thousand rubles were promised in compensation! And people are mostly poor, where are they from their home and everything acquired?

But if the crowding out of the Ukrainians will take place, but it will take a lot of time (in fact, the four days have already passed), then this will not be enough to restore Putin’s prestige in the elites and his demonic image in the world. You will need something else. Like a plowman losing power, he will have to commit something especially terrible and cruel. Start another war, for example: with Poland, with Latvia, with Moldova? Are there any strength? Apply nuclear weapons - and he will decide, and will his own team allow him?
And with the population of the problem. They are now turning to him for help - and who else to contact? But this is not yet demand, but requests. So far, he does not say directly that it was his crazy politics to human tragedies, to the destruction of life. The key here is the word "so far." Still, the sovereign is obliged to defend his territory. Or he is not a sovereign!
Of course, the moral abyss that our country fell into his favor. There is no solidarity at all. Many thought that if Ukrainian troops entered our territory, then this would cause patriotic consolidation, “we will repulse the robbers” and so on - according to the Ukrainian model. It doesn't look like it yet. The battles near Kursk are of interest - this is evident at the request on the Internet, but there is no sympathy for the victims that go beyond the framework of official actions. As one Z-blogger noted, the slowdown of YouTube worries much more than the loss of the territory.
Actually, it is to this moral disaster that Putin has been leading Russia for a quarter of a century. Just today, twenty -five years of his coming to the highest power - his appointment to the prime minister, and hence the future president. Probably, the authorities hope that the problems of residents of the Kursk region for the majority of the population will mean as little as the flooding of Orsk or Belgorod's bombing. Let's see.
True, the Kursk knockdown gave rise to some problems and moral for us. Statements have already gone, including from very worthy people, which, they say, is impossible to rejoice at the advance of Ukrainian troops on our land, and even more so to dream of their jerking in Moscow, since such a scenario will inevitably be accompanied by the death and suffering of civilians. Do not brush yourself from this problem: Glory, they say, to Ukraine - and closed the topic. But what seems necessary to me is to understand that
Between the desire of victory to Ukraine, which, in my opinion, meets the interests of Russia, on the one hand, and by sympathy for the misfortunes of compatriots, for example, those who have suffered in recent days in the Kursk region, on the other, there is no contradiction.
If you preserve identification with your country, then the death of its inhabitants, especially civilians who have exposed their own state, will never be just statistics for you, like the figures of the victims of the civil war somewhere in Africa. You, if you have such an opportunity, will try to minimize the victims by equipping bomb shelters, for example, or working as a doctor. You, if you are a well -known and influential person, in the case of a large -scale attack of Ukraine in Russia (I personally consider this option unlikely) you will turn to Ukrainians with a request to provide humanitarian corridors, try to minimize the number of victims. You will not rejoice at the misfortunes of those who lived with you on neighboring streets and speak the same language. But you have no right to forget who started this war and whose victory it should end. In the interests, including their people.
Actually, many Germans have encountered the same problem eighty years ago.
