Evacuation began in the Belgorod region

On the morning of August 12, the authorities of the Belgorod region announced the evacuation of residents of the Krasnoyaruzhsky district, which borders the Belovsky district of the Kursk region, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered the day before. Later, the authorities of the Belovsky district itself called for the evacuation of all residents. Then the operational headquarters of the Kursk region officially announced that it had begun to remove people from the area.

On the afternoon of August 12, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on “an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to invade the territory” of the country. According to the department, over the past 24 hours, Russian troops attacked the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of Kurilovka, Plekhovo, Lyubimovka, Sudzha, Kositsa, Gogolevka, Kazachi Lokni, Mikhailovka, Sverdlyakovka, Kursk region.

How much Russian territory does Ukraine control?

Vladimir Putin convened a meeting “on the situation in the regions bordering Ukraine.” He said that negotiations with Ukraine after the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region “cannot be discussed.”

The head of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, at a meeting with Putin, said that there are 28 settlements in the region under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to him, there are about 2,000 people in this territory, whose fate is unknown to the authorities. The Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState, at the same time, writes about 44 controlled settlements.

Smirnov also stated that “the depth of penetration into the territory of the Kursk region is 12 km” and “the width along the front is 40 km” (thus, the fighting, according to Russian authorities, covered about 480 square kilometers ). With these words, Putin interrupted the governor, saying that “this military department will report what the width and depth is there.”

The Ukrainian authorities for the first time officially confirmed the operation in the Kursk region. Vladimir Zelensky published a recording from a meeting of the headquarters, in which the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, states that the Ukrainian army controls about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.

Sudzha is probably under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The Z-channel “Veteran's Notes” reported that Sudzha is under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This can also be evidenced by a video published on the night of August 12 in the titktok account “ZSU NGU SSO NP SBU”: it shows how Ukrainian equipment drives along the eastern outskirts of the city. However, it is unknown when exactly the video was filmed.

Radio Liberty published satellite images of the destruction at the Sudzha gas measuring station. Journalists found that some of the damage appeared between August 9 and 10, and some between August 10 and 11. The photo from August 11 shows that one of the station’s administrative buildings and one of the sites with measuring equipment were almost completely destroyed.

On the evening of August 12, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the transfer of additional forces to build up the group of troops in the Kursk region. “Personnel, military equipment, ammunition and other cargo necessary for combat work and comprehensive support of the troops are being transported,” the department said in a statement.

Previously, “Verstka” calculated that Ukrainian media and telegram channels published at least 11 videos allegedly featuring Russian conscript soldiers. As reported in the Ukrainian project “I want to find”, “the status of a prisoner of war was confirmed for 47 applications, 30 of which were conscripts .” We also wrote that the command abandoned the conscripts in the Kursk region to their fate: they had neither weapons nor instructions from the commanders: “ it was chaos, there were no instructions at all .”
