In the Barguzinsky district of Buryatia, two tourists fell off a cliff while running away from a bear. One of them died, the other was injured, the regional branch of the Investigative Committee of Russia reported .
According to the department, on August 14, two men were relaxing on the shore of the Chivyrkuisky Bay of Lake Baikal. They reportedly sailed to one of the remote bays by boat. At some point, a bear came out of the forest towards them.
"While running away from a wild animal, the tourists fell off a cliff. One of them died, the second received injuries of varying severity," the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The Telegram channel of the Zabaikalsky National Park, where the incident took place, reported that the tourists came from Irkutsk. According to the organization, at about ten in the morning the men went to the shore of Zmeinaya Bay "in search of wild plants" - mushrooms and pine cones.
“According to one of the participants in the incident, they noticed a bear on the way, got scared and ran, then jumped off a cliff into the water,” the report says .
According to the national park, the second tourist with a broken collarbone was taken to the Barguzin Central Republican Hospital.
The Investigative Committee added that an investigative task force had been dispatched to the scene of the incident to conduct a detailed inspection and interview eyewitnesses. After that, "a procedural decision will be made" on the case.
