Kasparov reminded Germany of the suffering caused to Europe and called for military aid to Ukraine

On August 19, two German newspapers published an appeal from world chess champion and politician Garry Kasparov to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz asking for military aid to be provided to Ukraine, Deutsche Welle reported .

The first appeal with a photograph of a woman in a cemetery with Ukrainian flags was published on a full page in the German tabloid Bild.

"Germany once brought the world to the brink of disaster. Chancellor Scholz, don't let it happen again. Give Ukraine the military aid it really needs," read the letter on a photograph of the appeal, with Kasparov's signature at the bottom.

It is noted that on the same day, a column by Kasparov appeared in the Welt newspaper with the headline: “Putin does not escalate the conflict when we respond to his actions - he escalates when we try to appease him.”

"Germany inflicted boundless suffering on Europe in the 20th century. Because of this history, Berlin has a special responsibility to prevent another such human tragedy. It is time for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in the face of Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine, to give Kyiv what it needs to protect its citizens," Kasparov wrote.

He also called the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation in the Kursk region using German weapons a "success." According to him, this success proves that Ukraine can win. "But they need Western support to reach the finish line," the chess player wrote.

As DW notes, Kasparov published such appeals to Scholz against the backdrop of discussions by German authorities about the possibility of reducing financial support for Ukraine. Earlier, a letter from Finance Minister Christian Lindner appeared in German media, in which he warned that "new measures" with Germany's financial obligations should only be taken if they are included in budget plans for this and subsequent years, DW reports.

On August 19, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the country would need at least $38 billion in funding from Western countries in 2025. On the same day, the German government said that the country would continue to help Ukraine in the war with Russia, and called all rumors about the end of military support false.
