Psychotic Iranian swallows nearly three kilograms of metal parts in three months

A 37-year-old Iranian man suffering from psychosis swallowed metal objects for more than three months and was admitted to a hospital in the city of Ahvaz complaining of acute abdominal pain and constant vomiting, the Daily Mail reports .

It is noted that doctors performed an operation and removed almost three kilograms of inedible objects from the patient's stomach, including screws, nuts, keys and even stones. In total, doctors counted 452 swallowed objects.

"Despite the huge amount of metal he ingested, the man did not appear to have suffered any ill effects until he first went to hospital for the problem. Further tests also showed that the metal had not penetrated into other parts of his digestive system," the Daily Mail reports.

Three days after the operation, doctors diagnosed the man with psychosis. Doctors gave the patient four more days to recover and transferred him to a psychiatric hospital.

Psychosis is a condition in which a person loses touch with reality. It can manifest itself in the form of hallucinations, delusional ideas, and strange thinking.

Psychosis often occurs in the context of other mental illnesses, such as severe and chronic depression, but can also be caused by head injury or a brain tumor.

Doctors re-diagnosed the man two weeks after the operation and found no complications. The Daily Mail notes that doctors were unable to explain the cause of the man's psychosis, but said he was "heavily addicted to opium."
