Vologda Governor Georgy Filimonov, a member of the Izborsk Club, a kickboxing specialist and a doctor of political sciences who studied the role of “soft power” in US foreign policy, decided to erect a monument to Joseph Stalin in his jurisdiction.

Of course, in response to a “public request” - although not named.

Judging by the situation in Vologda, there are much more pressing requests there.

Not to mention the fact that erecting a monument to a tyrant and mass murderer is an insult to the memory of his victims.

However, in order not to get up twice, the Vologda governor announced a monument to another mass murderer - Ivan the Terrible.

According to Filimonov, work on the monument is nearing completion, and it will be installed on the territory of the house-museum where Stalin lived in exile from December 1911 to February 1912.

And it is necessary to erect a monument because “with all the understanding of the ambiguous interpretation of the role of the individual, we must recognize the great achievements, know the history of our country, honor and be proud of it, because our history is a single and indivisible chain of interconnected, chained links of the historical process, each of which shaped the strength, spirit and will of our great people.”

How exactly Stalin’s actions shaped the strength, spirit and will of our great people is easy to find out from numerous (and still accessible) sources.

11.5 million victims of repression (of which 1.1 million were executed, including on lists signed personally by Stalin), dozens of deported peoples, a monstrous Gulag network spread throughout the country (including the notorious Kargopollag in the Vologda region) , crippled destinies of “members of the families of traitors to the Motherland” -

all this deserves a completely unambiguous interpretation.

This interpretation is contained, among other things, in the decisions of the highest authorities of the USSR and Russia - which have not yet been canceled, although attempts at revision are already evident.

Suffice it to recall the reworking of the Concept of State Policy for Perpetuating the Memory of Victims of Political Repression described by the author in Novaya Gazeta and the zeal of the Prosecutor General’s Office, seeking to cancel some of the decisions on the rehabilitation of these victims, since the “authorities” could not be wrong.

And it is not surprising that, having caught the trend with a supreme instinct, some propagandists have already begun to praise the decision of the Vologda governor, who acts despite the “cries of the liberals.”

He acts, however, despite the impressive situation in the region he leads.

According to the data cited in his blog by the chairman of the Yabloko party, Nikolai Rybakov, the Vologda region is on the list of regions with acute shortages of doctors: in 2022, hospitals and clinics lacked 689 doctors and nurses.

• The Vologda region has the highest growth rate of mortality in Russia - plus 18.3%, according to Rosstat, compared to last year.

• In the first two months of 2024, the population fell by 1,813 people, a 41% increase from the same period in 2023. In February 2024, 677 children were born in the region and 1,394 people died.

• In 2023, it was reported that the Vologda region lacks 255 teachers. If measures are not taken, by 2028 this figure will increase to 1,242 vacancies.

• In 2023 they wrote that most schools in Vologda are in disrepair. The share of such general education institutions requiring major repairs is 90.5%.

• At the end of 2023, more than half of the roads in the Vologda region (57.1%) do not meet regulatory requirements.

• Finally, at the end of 2023, the region’s housing stock was not equipped with: sewerage - by 30.86%, water supply - by 25.7%, gas - by 27.02%...

There can hardly be any doubt that there is a “public demand” to change this state of affairs. But they are in no hurry to listen to this request.

But they are in a hurry to immortalize the tyrant and murderer. And not only Stalin: as already mentioned, Filimonov announced the appearance of a monument to Ivan the Terrible, a bronze model of which stands in his office.

Which, from his point of view, is “more than logical”, because “the figure of Ivan the Terrible is integrally connected with Vologda and the history of our region.”

And indeed it is connected, but perhaps the Vologda governor and doctor of sciences did not teach history well at school.

In 1656, Ivan the Terrible decided to turn Vologda into the capital of the oprichnina - one of the most monstrous phenomena in Russian history, which (to quote the Great Russian Encyclopedia) “demonstrated the functioning of autocratic power in the guise of terrorist despotism.”

The hunt for “traitors”, extrajudicial executions, ruin and terror, widespread “famine and pestilence”, repressions against the Orthodox Church and open violation of Orthodox values ​​and norms by Ivan the Terrible, the transformation of the tsar and the state into a robber and rapist, the unpunished atrocities of the guardsmen are described in sufficient detail in historical literature.

As historians write, “scribal books compiled in the first decades after the oprichnina create the impression that the country experienced a devastating enemy invasion.”

In twenty years, this will lead to the Time of Troubles: famine, crop failure, the emergence of impostors claiming the throne, the invasion of foreign troops, the complete impoverishment of the people, the decline of the economy and the degradation of the state...

This, apparently, is an example to follow for the Vologda governor. Want to repeat?
