The Federal Penitentiary Service was ordered to pay 100 thousand rubles to the family of a prisoner who was not treated in the colony. After his release due to illness, he weighed 35 kilograms - and soon died

The Kuibyshevsky District Court of Irkutsk partially satisfied the demands of the relatives of prisoner Anatoly Zubarev, who was released from the colony due to illness and soon died at home. Human rights activist Svyatoslav Khromenkov announced the court’s decision.

Zubarev's family demanded to recover one and a half million rubles from the Federal Penitentiary Service as compensation for moral damage. The court ruled that the department must pay 100 thousand rubles.

Since 2019, Zubarev has been serving a 12-year sentence in a rape case. In 2022, he was diagnosed with cancer, and his wife Elena tried for six months to get her husband released due to illness.

Elena said that Anatoly was transferred to another colony where there is a hospital - but he still did not receive the necessary treatment. According to her, Zubarev lost weight “to such a state that one can already say ‘a living corpse,’” and also stopped walking and caring for himself.

Zubarev was released on October 26, 2022. At that time, he weighed 35 kilograms; he was brought to the court hearing on a stretcher. On December 1 of the same year he died.

According to Khromenkov, the examination in court revealed shortcomings in the provision of medical care to prisoners in the colony. “Without a doubt, in the last months of his life, Anatoly Zubarev suffered from severe pain caused by illnesses. If he had received proper medical care, the prisoner could not only not suffer, but also spend longer with his family and friends,” the human rights activist noted.
