At least 1.1 billion people around the world live in extreme poverty, and 40% of them live in countries affected by military conflicts, according to a UN study dedicated to the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Poverty reduction is worst in countries that are either in a state of military conflict or have recently emerged from it. In them, one in four people lacks access to water, electricity, food and education. In countries that have not been affected by military conflicts, every twentieth person suffers from this.
As part of the study, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), together with the University of Oxford, analyzed statistics and research from 112 countries with a total population of 6.3 billion people, and also conducted its own surveys in an additional 20 countries. Despite this, the authors remind us that collecting data in countries where there are military conflicts is difficult.
More than half of those living in extreme poverty are children. Globally, almost 28% of children live in poverty, compared to 13.5% for people over 18 years of age.
The study pays special attention to Afghanistan, where from 2022 more and more people fall below the poverty line. In total, almost 66% of Afghans live in extreme poverty.
“ Eradicating poverty is a critical foundation for humane, decent societies that leave no one behind ,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
He also called on governments to put the interests of their people first and build institutions that can eradicate poverty.
