The European Union intends to support Poland in limiting migration. This is stated in the declaration of the European Union summit, which was published on October 17.
“Russia, Belarus or any other country cannot afford to abuse our values, including the right to asylum, and undermine our democracies. The European Council expresses its solidarity with Poland and the council states facing these challenges. Exceptional situations require the adoption of appropriate measures,” notes the EU summit declaration . Thus, the association supports the intentions of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to tighten the country’s migration policy.
Previously, Tusk announced that Poland plans to suspend the right to asylum. He also announced that the coalition would seek recognition of this decision at the EU level. Tusk believes that the right to asylum is being used by Alexander Lukashenko, Vladimir Putin and smugglers to provoke a migration crisis in Europe.
The EU summit declaration actually gives the green light to tighten migration policy under the pretext of protecting territorial borders: “ The European Council recalls its determination to ensure the effective control of the external borders of the Union by all available means, including with the support of the European Union, in accordance with EU legislation and international law . ”
In 2021, refugees from the Middle East began to arrive en masse at Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian checkpoints on the border with Belarus. Poland, Lithuania and Latvia declared a state of emergency and built walls on the border with Belarus. In 2023, Finland similarly closed its land borders with Russia after refugees from Africa and the Middle East began arriving at checkpoints. In the spring of 2024, a bill was introduced into the Finnish Parliament to prohibit asylum requests at certain sections of the border.
During the summit, the European Council also suspended Georgia's accession to the EU. The EU is also considering suspending the visa-free regime with Georgia due to the adoption of laws on “foreign agents” and the ban on LGBT+ “propaganda.”
