The mother of Nika Shakarami, a 16-year-old girl killed by morality police during protests in Iran, has been detained in Iran. Nicky's sister reported this on social networks.

In September 2022, a wave of protests swept across Iran following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman detained for allegedly wearing the hijab incorrectly. Video from a street protest taken days after Mahsa Amini's death shows Niki Shakarami standing on a trash can and setting scarves on fire. Shakarami's family discovered the girl's body in the morgue more than a week after she went missing. The Iranian authorities denied the connection between Nika's death and the protests - official sources stated that the girl committed suicide. Relatives of Nika Shakarami denied the evidence of the Iranian authorities.
Nicky's older sister, Aida Shakarami, announced in a social media post this week: "My mother was arrested this afternoon in Khorramabad [a city in western Iran]. “I don’t know the reason for the arrest or what she is accused of.”
