Drone attack on special forces university in Gudermes in Chechnya

The University of Special Forces in Gudermes is one of the main centers of recruitment for the war in Ukraine

Ukrainian UAVs hit the Russian Special Forces University in Gudermes, said the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. According to Kadyrov, the drone strike took place at 6:30 a.m., as a result of which “the roof of an empty building” caught fire; no one was injured. Kadyrov did not specify exactly how many drones were involved in the attack.

UAV hit the main building of the university

Judging by the photo distributed by telegram channels, drones hit the main building of the university. Also in the photo, two fires are clearly visible on the roof of the building on opposite sides of the semicircular building. This may indicate that there were at least two UAVs.

In the spring of 2023, the establishment wrote on social networks that the main building was under construction. It was supposed to house a multimedia complex, a multifunctional two-level gym, swimming pools, classrooms, a conference room, offices of federation representatives, a canteen, a tactical equipment store and an administrative part. It is unknown whether construction work had been completed by the time of the attack.

Special Forces University recruits contract soldiers for the war in Ukraine

The Russian University of Special Forces was founded in 2013. It is financed by the Chechen oligarch and Kadyrov’s fellow villager Movsadi Alviev. He also owns skyscrapers in the center of Grozny, Gudermes, Argun and Shali, as well as an autodrome, a medical center, a garbage and telecommunications company. Since 2011, companies associated with him have received government contracts worth at least 20 billion rubles.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the university began to actively recruit mercenaries to participate in the war. In August of this year, Kadyrov stated that by that time more than 47 thousand fighters, including volunteers, had already completed training at the university. In February 2024, the establishment was officially named after Vladimir Putin.
