Recently, a difficult journalistic fate brought me... no, not to Paris (where this cruel fate threw Soviet international journalists), but to Rutub - to an alternative domestic platform. After being blocked by YouTube, Russian channels were forced to move there (Zvezda, Channel One, NTV, VGTRK, Margarita Simonyan’s IP, Solovyov.Live and others). Some of them at first seemed to be happy: let’s develop our own, let this malicious and simply harmful YouTube go through the woods. Nevertheless, 17 channels went to court, demanding that Google, which owns YouTube, restore their accounts there. The corporation ignored the demand. And she received a grenade in response - a fine of 2 undecillion rubles. An undecillion, as knowledgeable people explained, is a unit with 36 zeros! Moreover, there are two undecillions! And this is not the limit. Until the requirements of the Russian court are met, Google will be charged a penalty every day. Therefore, the amount of the fine may increase - although, it would seem, only the stars are further away. Experts have calculated that the height of a pack of even one undecillion rubles in 5-thousandth banknotes would be approximately 200 times greater than the diameter of the visible part of the Universe.
Among the victims of the insidious Google was the channel “Empathy Manuchi”, which, by the way, is very popular among a certain part of the audience on YouTube. Its host, Vyacheslav Manucharov, said after the blocking:
“We managed to hold out on the enemy platform for more than two years. This is already a big victory, which provided several hundred million views to conversations in the common sense paradigm. As of July 4, 2024, the channel had 1.77 million subscribers... But our proud Varangian does not surrender to the enemy, we will continue to work for you in the future.”
We continued. On Rutuba. The carriage (for now, anyway) turned into a pumpkin. Millions did not move to the domestic platform following their shepherd. During the period that elapsed after being blocked on YouTube, “Empathy Manuchi” gained a little more than 144 thousand subscribers. But the proud Varangian, aka Manucharov, as promised, does not give up, and now YouTube is the main object of his antipathy, and not only Pugacheva and Galkin and other “left” stars are the former inexhaustible source of his inspiration.
Having invited the head of the Duma Committee on Information Policy, Technology and Communications, Alexander Khinshtein, for an interview, he, assuming the guest was an absolute ally, in the very first minutes announced with pathos: “I’m happy that they demolished my channel on YouTube, and we moved to Rutub.” - "Why?" — Khinshtein was surprised. “Because this eternal Sword of Damocles hung over me. I waited all the time. We held out for two years after the start of the SVO. I became President Putin’s confidant for the second time, and it infuriated them.”
Answering questions about the slowdown and possible long-awaited blocking of YouTube, Khinshtein clearly violated the plan of the interviewer, who was expecting a position in solidarity with him: “Fight YouTube!”
“If you ask me if I like the current situation with YouTube, I’ll answer honestly: no, I don’t.” Look what it's like! The author of some prohibition initiatives turned out to be a liberal.
Or maybe it was precisely against the background of Manucharov, who was intolerant of everything in the world, that even Khinshtein seemed like a liberal.
He admitted that Rutub has not yet reached 100% competitiveness. I noticed that viewers should always have an alternative. He said that he himself watched YouTube (mostly old films), and his children watched cartoons there. When YouTube began to slow down, many of his subscribers turned to him, outraged that they were being deprived of the opportunity to watch educational and entertainment programs: “a habit and, of course, it’s convenient - what’s there to lie about.”
“How long will YouTube last?” - Manucharov asked with obvious hope that his days are numbered. “Well, it’s holding on for now,” Khinshtein replied.
And then, with great regret, looking soulfully into the camera lens, he explained that the authorities had nothing to do with it at all, and Google itself was to blame: it doesn’t care about Russian users, after the imposition of sanctions against Russia, the equipment is not updated, it breaks down and breaks down. In short, he behaves boorishly, while Russia is always open to dialogue. Well, that is, we ourselves are not going to block anything, and the slowdown of YouTube is their problem, not ours.
Khinshtein also frankly said that he himself is against prohibitions and restrictions on everything in the world. That any idea and the most sensible plan can be taken to the point of absurdity, vulgarized, turned upside down, ridiculed.
And in order for people to flock to Rutub, “we must create our own Dudya*, our own Ksenia Sobchak... It’s terrible that we still live in the system of Alla Pugacheva (we didn’t ignore the Diva), in the system of Rodnyansky*... We generally need people with brains."
