What happened: Republican Donald Trump was elected 47th President of the United States.
Details: Trump won the 60th presidential election in United States history. He managed to win over four of the seven swing states (North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin).
Main events:
- According to forecasts from leading television channels and agencies, Trump will receive more than 270 electoral votes (270 was needed to win). His Democratic opponent, incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris, will receive about 220 votes.
- Trump has already declared himself the new president and has begun accepting congratulations from world leaders. “I will make the USA better than ever. The Lord saved my life for a reason,” he said.
Hi all! Today is the US presidential election: the most important political event of the year (and perhaps not only this) in the world. Meduza, as always, will monitor the voting progress and vote counting online.
It is now five in the evening on the East Coast of the United States, and two in the afternoon on the West Coast. Voting has long begun in all states.
It ends at different times everywhere: some states stop voting in the early evening local time, some take longer to vote. The first to close will be some counties in Indiana and Kentucky, at 2 a.m. Moscow time. Georgia will be the first swing state to count votes at 3:00 Moscow time.
Just in case, let us briefly recall the process of determining the winner.
US presidential elections are indirect. Formally, Americans vote for electors - special people who, in January, at a special event in Washington, will cast their votes for the candidate supported by voters.
There are only 538 electors. Their number in each state is different, it is distributed approximately in proportion to the population. The most populous states have the most electors: California - 54 and Texas - 40. The fewest (three each) are in North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, Delaware, Alaska and the District of Columbia.
The winner of the popular vote in a particular state receives the votes of all electoral votes from that state. (There are two exceptions - Nebraska and Maine, where the number of electors is divided depending on the percentage of the vote). Thus, in order to ultimately win, a candidate does not need to receive the votes of a majority of Americans overall or even win a majority of states; the main thing is to win (by any margin) in those states where the majority of the population lives.
In most states, the result can be predicted in advance with a high probability - since one of the candidates has a clear advantage. Therefore, the outcome of the vote is decided by the so-called swing states - where before the voting begins, the candidates' chances of winning are approximately equal.
This year's seven swing states are Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin. In total they give 93 electoral votes. The largest and most important of these states is Pennsylvania, which has 19 electors.
Of the remaining (non-swing) states, CNN projects Trump to win 23 (plus Nebraska and Maine, where both he and Harris will get multiple votes). In total, Trump will have 219 electoral votes in these states.
Harris, CNN believes, will win 18 states. This will give her 226 votes.

The first areas will close in 15 minutes. It's time to read our detailed preview of the pre-election layouts.
Trump said on Truth Social that there is "a lot of talk about massive fraud in Philadelphia." Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania, a key state in this election.
“Police are on their way,” Trump wrote.
He did not specify what kind of falsifications he was talking about. Philadelphia police officials told CNN they were not aware of any "massive fraud."
CNN (which traditionally supports Democrats) recalls that Trump has been talking about “fraud” in the Philadelphia election for years without providing any evidence.
Polls have closed in some counties in Indiana and Kentucky.
No intrigue is expected in these two states; according to all scenarios, Trump should win a landslide victory there.
A sign leading to the polling station.

In addition to the presidential elections, congressional elections are being held in the United States today: based on their results, a third of the Senate and the entire composition of the House of Representatives will be renewed (or re-elected).
The vast majority of Americans decided who they would vote for a few weeks before the election, CNN writes .
The network's national poll showed that eight out of ten people had decided on their candidate before the start of September. And in the last week before the elections, less than 10% of voters made a decision.

Despite the fact that the vast majority of Americans had decided on their candidates in advance, both Trump and Harris campaigned vigorously until the very last moment. That's how it was.
The first results of the vote count in two states where polling stations have already partially closed: in Indiana, Trump gets 56.6%, in Kentucky - 63.9%. In both cases, less than ten percent of the ballots have been counted.
About a dozen polling stations in Georgia were evacuated due to reports of mining. The threat of explosions turned out to be false, but voters should wait until the polling stations resume work.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the threats came “from Russia,” without specifying why that conclusion was reached. CNN's intelligence sources, in turn, said they were checking whether the mining reports were connected to Russia.
In particular, the channel's interlocutors said , the letter containing the bomb threat came from a mail server account with a Russian domain. Intelligence agencies are checking the history of this email account, trying to determine who is using it.
At the same time, CNN clarifies, it is possible that the email address was fake, and the intelligence services are not yet sure that the mining messages are somehow connected with Russia.
Due to the temporary suspension of work, voting at these polling stations will last slightly longer than originally planned.

In Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin (one of the swing states), a problem was discovered in the automatic ballot counting machine.
Because of this, 31 thousand ballots cast during early voting will be recounted . The Electoral Commission found it difficult to say how much this would slow down the publication of results.
Voting has also completed in Vermont, Virginia, South Carolina, some counties in Florida, as well as the remaining counties in Indiana and Kentucky.
Georgia will give the winner 16 electoral votes, Virginia - 13 votes, South Carolina - nine, Vermont - three.
If nothing extraordinary happens, Trump should win in Virginia and South Carolina, and Harris should win in Vermont.
Fox gives Indiana and Kentucky to Trump, Vermont to Kamala Harris. The electoral votes are 19:3 in favor of Trump.
NBC , ABC and CNN have so far confirmed Trump's victory only in Kentucky, Harris also in Vermont. According to their version, the score is currently 8:3.
NBC, ABC and CNN, following Fox, also confirm Trump's victory in Indiana.
In Georgia, based on the results of processing 3% of ballots, Trump took a slight lead. Of course, this doesn't mean anything yet.
Four years ago, Joe Biden won in Georgia - he beat Donald Trump by 12 thousand votes (0.23%). It was the first victory for a Democratic candidate in the state since 1992.
In Florida, with just over half of the ballots counted, Trump leads relatively comfortably with 53% of the vote.
Florida is Trump's home state; he won there in both 2016 and 2020.
Fox, NBC and CNN immediately colored West Virginia red (Republican) on their maps, although there are no official results from there yet.
So far, 23:3 in favor of Trump on all major TV channels.
Edison Research has released exit polls in swing states.
Exit polls gave Trump victory in Nevada (47% versus 44% for Harris) and Pennsylvania (47-46).
In Wisconsin (47%), Georgia (49%), Michigan (48%) and North Carolina (48%), polls show Harris ahead.
In Arizona, both candidates have 46%.
In Georgia, 14% of the ballots have been counted, while Trump is confidently in the lead - he has 61.5% of the popular vote.

Meanwhile, 83-year-old Bernie Sanders predictably won re-election as senator from Vermont.
Sanders was a finalist in the Democratic presidential race in 2016 and 2020, but lost first to Hillary Clinton and then to Joe Biden.
He has been sitting in the Senate since 2007. Previously, he represented Vermont in the House of Representatives for 16 years.
The traditionally Republican-supporting Fox channel has already given South Carolina to Trump. The remaining major TV channels still believe that the winner has not yet been determined.
Among them is Pennsylvania, the largest swing state.
Fox immediately gives Trump victory in Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Harris in Illinois, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Jersey.
For NBC and CNN, the winner in Mississippi, New Jersey and Rhode Island has yet to be determined.
In addition, all major television networks confirm Trump's victory in Florida.
Fox : Trump - 105, Harris - 72.
NBC : Trump - 99, Harris - 27.
CNN : Trump - 90, Harris - 27.
ABC : Trump - 99, Harris - 27.
Fox, unlike other TV channels, has already given Harris victory in Illinois (19 electors) and New Jersey (14 electors).
Trump's large lead that we see now should not be surprising - it was predicted and is associated solely with different closing times of polling stations.
For example, voting continues in California (54 electors), New York (28 electors), and Washington (12 electors). These states are virtually guaranteed to vote for Harris.
In Georgia, nearly half of the ballots have been counted. Trump leads with 55% of the vote.
In North Carolina, 11% of ballots were processed with Harris ahead (52.6%).
In Pennsylvania, Harris took a commanding lead (72%), but only 8% of the votes have been counted.
Polling stations just closed in another state: Arkansas.
There are six electoral votes and, unless something incredible happens, Trump will get them.
The next closure of polling stations is in half an hour - and in a dozen states at once. They include New York, with 28 electors (Harris should win them), as well as swing states in Arizona and Wisconsin and some counties in Michigan.

CNN and NBC follow Fox in recording Trump's victory in South Carolina and Arkansas.
Thus, the Republican already has at least 105 electoral votes.
By 04:00 Moscow time, polling stations had closed in 15 more states: Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North and South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Fox : Trump - 178, Harris - 113.
NBC : Trump - 154, Harris - 30.
CNN : Trump - 154, Harris - 27.
ABC : Trump - 154, Harris - 30.
Differences in voting results between different counties in the same state (for example, urban and rural areas) are often very large, so the percentages of support for candidates can change very sharply as the count progresses, depending on which counties release results earlier or later.
Meanwhile, amendments to legalize abortion and recreational marijuana in the state did not pass in Florida.
Both amendments received a majority of votes (57% for abortion rights, 56% for legalizing marijuana), but they needed the support of 60% of voters to pass.

In total, about 64 million votes have already been counted in the United States. In absolute numbers, as well as in the number of projected electors, Trump is ahead: he is ahead of Harris by almost four million votes.
The New York Times, citing sources, writes that Elon Musk will watch the vote count with Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Musk is one of Trump's most high-profile supporters this election, having spent $119 million supporting the Republican's campaign.
Among them is the last swing state, Nevada.
In addition, voting has ended in Montana and Utah, as well as most of Idaho.
Sites are currently open in California, Oregon, Washington, some Idaho counties, as well as Alaska and Hawaii.
Fox : Trump - 205, Harris - 117.
NBC : Trump - 201, Harris - 81.
CNN : Trump - 172, Harris - 81.
ABC : Trump - 172, Harris - 91.
According to CNN, based on the results of counting 45% of the ballots, Trump receives 50.1%, Harris - 49%.
In two other swing states where the count is nearing completion, Trump is also doing well so far.
In Georgia, where nearly 82% of the ballots have been counted, the Republican has 52.2%. In North Carolina, after processing 68% of the ballots, Trump had 51.9%.

Bookmakers go even further than the NY Times and, as of now, leave Harris virtually no chance of winning: the largest bookmakers estimate the probability of her winning at 5-7%.
However, vote counting has not yet been completed in any of the swing states.
Georgia came closest to the finish line: 90% of the ballots were counted there. The gap between Trump and Harris there has narrowed somewhat: the Republican now has 51.1%, and the Democratic representative has 48.2%.
Voting will continue for an hour in Alaska and Hawaii.
Fox : Trump - 216, Harris - 193.
NBC : Trump - 214, Harris - 153.
CNN : Trump - 211, Harris - 145.
ABC : Trump - 214, Harris - 153.

The Associated Press and The New York Times declared Trump the winner in North Carolina.
This is the first of seven swing states in which any major media outlet is giving victory to one of the candidates.
Right now, Trump is leading in six of the seven swing states. Harris - none (Nevada has not yet published any results).
Meanwhile, in Missouri, abortion rights advocates pushed for it to be included in the state constitution.
According to the Associated Press, the “fundamental right to reproductive freedom” amendment was supported by 53.8% of voters.
Abortion has been completely banned in Missouri since 2022.
NBC News, following the AP and NY Times, gives victory in North Carolina to Trump.
Fox and CNN also called Trump the winner of the North Carolina vote with 90% of the vote counted.
Polls have closed in Hawaii.
Amendment . We originally wrote that voting had ended throughout the United States. In fact, voting in Alaska will continue until 9:00 Moscow time. We apologize for the error.
Fox : Trump - 232, Harris - 216.
NBC : Trump - 230, Harris - 189.
CNN : Trump - 230, Harris - 182.
ABC : Trump - 230, Harris - 194.
The head of the headquarters Harris Jen Dillon wrote to employees an email that expressed the opinion that the result of the race will hardly be clear earlier than a few hours later, CNN reports .
Dillon expressed the opinion that Harris can eventually show good results in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania - she made such assumptions on the basis of preliminary voting results in large cities - such as Philadelphia and Detroit.
“Let's sleep a bit and prepare well for tomorrow,” Dillon concluded.
NBC gives Trump a victory in Georgia.
CNN also predicts that Trump will win in Georgia.
Kamala Harris will not be addressed to his supporters until the end of the day on November 5, the representative of her headquarters Sedarik Richmond said.
“We still have votes that need to be counted. We still have states where the winner has not yet been named, ”he said. Harris, according to Richmond, will turn to his voters tomorrow (that is, in the evening of Moscow time).
If the Republican holds leadership in Pennsylvania (after processing 90% of the ballots, he is ahead of Harris by 3.5 percentage points), then he will be enough to win in any of the remaining hesitating states - Nevada, Arizona, Michigan or Wisconsin - to become president again.
According to Fox, Trump wins in Pennsylvania.
Fox, taking into account Pennsylvania, gives Trump 267 votes of electors.
Other media have not yet declared the Republican the winner in Pennsylvania.
Trump also continues to hold leadership in all other hesitating states - Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Trump will soon speak to his supporters in Florida, his headquarters said.
According to Fox estimates, Trump won in Wisconsin - this is a plus of ten votes of electors. Thus, the Republican guaranteed himself 277 votes.
In addition to Fox, none of the main television channels and agencies involved in evaluating the vote count, until Trump announced the winner either in Wisconsin or Pennsylvania.
According to the TV channel, in total, Trump has 265 votes of electors from 270 necessary for victory.
The NBC channel also gives a victory in Pennsylvania Trump. According to his forecasts, the candidate from the Republicans already gained 266 votes of electors.
Fox : Trump - 277, Harris - 226.
NBC : Trump - 266, Harris - 194.
CNN : Trump - 266, Harris - 188.
ABC : Trump - 266, Harris - 194.
Fox, with reference to his forecasts, actually announced Trump by the 47th US President, although not all American television channels agree that the Republican candidate gained the necessary number of votes for victory.
Trump's supporters have already begun to celebrate his victory, notes the BBC.
Republican Mike Johnson, who holds the post of speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, has also already called Trump the "elected president" of the country. According to the forecasts of most leading American television channels, there are not enough vote to Victory Trump.

Trump thanks his supporters and family for support. He called his wife Melania the “first lady” of the United States, and also stated that the country gave him a “powerful mandate”.
At the same time, the forecast of most large television channels and agencies still suggests that Trump has not yet gained the number of votes for victory.
“We have a country that needs help, it needs it very much. We are going to restore our borders and fix everything in our country, ”Trump said. He also promised the Americans that every day he would “fight” for them and open the “Golden Age of America”.
In addition to Wans, on the stage of a conference center, members of his family and headquarters joined the West-Palm Beach to Trump.
The New York Times, meanwhile, also gives a victory in Pennsylvania Trump. According to the channel forecasts, the candidate from the Republicans now has 267 votes of electors.

In particular, Trump recalled Mask projects. According to the politician, he was impressed by the launch and landing of the Super Heavy launch vehicle. In addition, Trump noted that Starlink provided the Internet to the victims of hurricane Helen.
