Two Russian servicemen received life sentences for mass murder in occupied Volnovakha. A court in Rostov-on-Don found Stanislav Rau and Anton Sopov guilty and sentenced them to serve their sentences in a special regime correctional colony, Kommersant reported .
The murder occurred on the night of October 28, 2023. Unknown men broke into a private house and shot everyone inside: 53-year-old Eduard Kapkanets with his 51-year-old wife Tatyana, their adult sons and their wives, a nine-year-old granddaughter, a four-year-old grandson and a distant relative who was visiting the Kapkanets family.
The family sold moonshine and refused free alcohol to the military, the publication cited one version of the investigation. According to another, the reason for the attack was a remark made by senior Kapkanets in a store by a drunken serviceman a few hours before the murder. Hearings on the case were held behind closed doors, writes Kommersant.

Rau and Sopov were detained based on statements from neighbors and recordings from two surveillance cameras. A neighbor saw soldiers leaving the crime scene on a motorcycle. One of the defendants rented a room in a house not far from the home of the Kapkanets family and kept a “cross motorcycle” in the yard, journalists quoted the investigation materials.
The publication's source close to the course of the closed trial said that Rau and Sopov did not admit guilt and were going to appeal the verdict.
