The All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion conducted a survey on Russians’ trust in sociologists and their research. According to the survey, 69% of Russians believe that opinion poll data are more likely to reflect the real sentiments of citizens. According to VTsIOM, 83 percent of Russians believe that opinion polls are more necessary than not. In 2022 and 2023, 90 percent answered this way. Only 12 percent consider opinion polls unnecessary.
Two-thirds of those surveyed agreed that opinion polls reflect the real mood in Russian society, while 23 percent disagreed with this statement. People who answered in the affirmative generally said that respondents honestly express their opinions, and the authorities take them into account.
Of those who answered that opinion poll data do not reflect the real mood of citizens, 13 percent believe that people are afraid to tell the truth, 12 percent - that people do not answer honestly, 11 percent - that the results will be falsified. Also, 13 percent doubt the honesty of the surveys because life does not get better after them.
On average, respondents rated their trust in sociologists at three and a half points out of five. A third of respondents (39%) rated their trust in sociologists at one to three points. Every fifth of them believes that sociologists lie or manipulate public opinion, 11 percent call them controlled and accuse them of propaganda.
