Scientists from Great Britain and Germany discovered amber in West Antarctica for the first time during their research. According to their report, published in the journal Antarctic Science, this amber is the “petrified blood” (resin) of ancient coniferous trees that grew in the southernmost part of the Earth 83-92 million years ago. This is reported by Science Alert.
The amber found proves that in the mid-Cretaceous period Antarctica was home to swampy rainforests and that in prehistory the environment was dominated by coniferous trees, similar to those that grow today in New Zealand and Patagonia. Scientists note that such a find indicates that once on all seven continents the environment was so warm and humid that trees capable of producing resin grew in it.

“Our goal now is to find out more about the ecosystem of these forests, whether they have burned down and whether traces of life can be found trapped in the amber. The discovery made the path to studying the past even clearer,” said Johan Klages from the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany.
Scientists have found fossilized wood and leaves in Antarctica as early as the early 19th century. But many of their findings dated back much further to prehistoric periods, when the supercontinent Gondwana existed. They did not know what happened to the forests in Antarctica when it broke away from Australia and South America.

In 2017, Klages' team discovered well-preserved fossils in West Antarctica. In 2020, they were able to discover fossilized roots, spores and pollen from trees that existed in Antarctica in the mid-Cretaceous period.
