The largest competition for the title of the best cheese in the world, the World Cheese Awards, was held in Portugal. In 2024, judges recognized the local sheep's milk cheese Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado as the best, calling its taste “fantastic,” writes CNN.
The competition took place on November 15 in the city of Viseu. This year, more than four thousand types of cheese from 47 countries competed for the title of best cheese. Judges scored each product based on appearance, smell, taste and texture.
According to competition organizer John Farrand, the event was held against the backdrop of the rich aroma of the cheeses, which made the atmosphere “very poignant.” CNN adds that the competition was very entertaining.

The judges, who were seated at 104 tables, ultimately identified 14 finalists, including cheeses from Portugal, Switzerland, Brazil, the USA, Norway, Italy, Germany and Spain. The winner was a Portuguese cheese produced in a small factory employing ten people.
Queijo de Ovelha Amanteigado cheese is made using a vegetarian enzyme derived from thistle. It's a sticky, buttery cheese with a herbaceous bitterness that's typically served by cutting off the top and spooning out the center, the publication notes.
“A delicious combination of protein and fat. This is truly a fantastic cheese,” one of the international jury members, Manuel Maia, described the Portuguese product.
In 2021 and 2023, the winners of the competition were also cheeses produced in the country where the event took place - this was the case in Spain and Norway. However, Farand notes that all cheeses in the competition are judged blindly by jury members.
