India announced the successful test of its first hypersonic missile

India has successfully tested a hypersonic missile. The Defense Research and Development Organization ( DRDO ) tested the missile on the evening of November 16 off the coast of Odisha, the Indian government said in a statement quoted by Bloomberg. The range of the missile declared by the Indian authorities is 1,500 kilometers.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh called the successful test an "important milestone" in strengthening the country's defense capabilities.

“This is a historic moment and this significant achievement has brought our country into the select group of countries with such important and advanced military technologies,” the Indian Defense Minister wrote on social media X, posting a photo of the missile launch.

Russia claims to have hypersonic weapons in its arsenal and is using the Zircon and Kinzhal missiles to strike Ukraine. China and the United States announced successful tests of hypersonic missiles several years ago.

Developments in this area, Bloomberg writes, in addition to India, are being carried out by Australia, France, Germany, and North Korea.
