The White House did not comment on this information. According to officials NYT spoke with, the weapons will most likely be used first against Russian and North Korean troops to protect Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region.
We are talking about the use of long-range missiles known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). They can reach targets at a distance of up to 300 km and are equipped with GPS and INS systems, which means they are highly accurate.
Following the United States, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro, the French and British authorities allowed shelling of Russian territory. This information was later removed from the article. If such permission is actually given, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to use long-range air-launched cruise missiles: the French SCALP-EG and the British Storm Shadow. These weapons have been effectively used more than once in attacks on occupied territories. In the modification supplied to Ukraine, such missiles have a range of 290 kilometers.
If the missiles are actually used, the Khalino military airfield, located 7 km east of the center of Kursk, may come under attack. The MiG-29 and Su-30 aircraft that flew combat missions to Ukraine are based there.
Also, missiles with cluster warheads, such as ATACMS, can hit numerous field camps in which a large number of manpower of the Russian Army is concentrated. According to a New Europe source in the Kursk region, several such camps are located in close proximity to the line of combat contact. It is likely that the Ukrainian Armed Forces also have data on the locations of Russian ammunition depots, enemy headquarters and communications centers. These objects are also likely to become targets of missile attacks.
Also, the Kursk Oil Refinery, which produces petroleum products and wholesales fuel, could become a target for a missile strike.
