Freedom House condemned the verdict for the journalist who collaborated with RS
The non -governmental human rights organization Freedom House condemned the verdict issued by the court in Chita against journalist Nicky Novak, who collaborated with radio free Europe/Radio Liberty. On November 26, the court found her guilty in the case "On Cooperation with a foreign organization on a confidential basis" and sentenced to the four years of the colony. The process was held closed.
Freedom House called the sentence politically motivated and condemned the "regrettable and cowardly" campaign to suppress independent journalists in Russia. "We demand an immediate and unconditional release of Novak from prison," the organization said in the social network X.
Earlier, the president of the media corporation Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Stevens Kapus made a call for immediately the release of Novak.
Novak was detained in 2023. She worked in Chitamedia, then was the editor -in -chief of Zab.ru. Since 2021, she headed the center "Gifted" in Chita, where they spent musical and poetic evenings. Since 2022, as a freelance correspondent, the Liberty has collaborated.
