Before the New Year, prices for mayonnaise and mayonnaise sauces will rise sharply in Russia due to rising oil prices. The Kommersant newspaper writes about this with reference to a letter from one of the largest manufacturers on the Russian market.
The mayonnaise manufacturer Essen Production AG, which is known for its Makheev brand products, notified retailers of an upcoming price increase from December 15. The company already raised prices for its products on November 15: then 18 items of mayonnaise and two categories of mayonnaise sauces went up by 10%. As Kommersant clarifies, other manufacturers may follow Essen Production AG, but prices for their products will most likely rise after the New Year holidays.
The increase in selling prices will affect several categories of goods at once. It will affect 21 popular names of mayonnaise under the brands “Maheev” and “Dobraya Khozyayka” - these products will rise in price by 2.9-10%. Four items of mayonnaise sauces will rise in price even more; price increases are expected in the range of 5-14.6%. Also, prices for two types of tomato paste will increase by 5-10%.
The rise in price of mayonnaise and sauces based on it is due to an increase in purchase prices for their main ingredients, including sunflower oil. Sovecon director Andrei Sizov calculated that the cost of raw sunflower oil on the domestic market was 103.85 thousand rubles per ton. Over the course of this year, it has risen in price by more than 40%. The newspaper's source adds that mayonnaise producers also use refined oil, which is on average 10% more expensive than raw oil.

Sizov does not foresee a further rise in domestic prices for sunflower oil. However, businesses still need to adapt to past increases. According to him, Essen Production AG may find it more difficult than other players in the market because the company does not have its own oil production. In addition, Sizov adds, the increase in the price of the final product is also affected by the increased costs of packaging and paint.
Russians have already begun to buy less mayonnaise and are focusing on its alternatives. Thus, from November 2023 to the end of October this year, sales of mayonnaise in physical terms fell by 2.2%. But demand for table sauces increased by 3.9% over the same period.
Earlier, Russians were warned about rising milk prices. The products of Russia's largest milk producer, Wimm-Bill-Dann, have become more expensive by 3.4% since November 1. The Ekomilk company announced a price increase of 10% from October of this year.
General Director of the National Union of Milk Producers Artem Belov said that prices are rising due to an increase in the cost of milk and an increase in the key rate by the Central Bank. However, a source from the Izvestia newspaper reported that the largest dairy producers have agreed with retail chains to reduce prices by 10-15% for drinking milk and butter.
