British oncologists have launched a clinical trial of a device that can detect skin cancer by chemical fumes released by the tumor. This was stated in a press release on the Bournemouth University website.
Cancerous areas of the skin emit volatile organic compounds, scientists explain. During a preliminary study, they were able to identify biomarkers that are most likely associated with skin cancer. Scientists have also created a sensor that can capture these vapors. The researchers plan to conduct clinical trials of their device in a hospital over the next three years.

Skin cancer can be difficult to diagnose by visual examination, so doctors very often refer healthy patients for additional diagnostics, explained Richard Paul, professor of bioanalytical chemistry at Bournemouth University. Scientists hope that their device will help diagnose skin cancer faster and more accurately, and that with its help it will be possible to achieve better treatment results.
“Our goal is a convenient, fast sensor that can detect skin cancer that requires no special training to use. Such a device can be used confidently by a variety of primary care providers, including nurses, and will improve skin cancer detection,” says Richard Paul.

The skin cancer detection device is being tested by scientists from Bournemouth University's Department of Natural and Environmental Sciences, together with colleagues from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University Hospitals Dorset.
