Residents of the city of Lensk in Yakutia shared footage of an asteroid that fell to Earth. Earlier, the European Space Agency reported that the diameter of the asteroid is about 70 centimeters.
The AstroAlert telegram channel notes that the fall of the celestial body occurred at 19:14 Moscow time. According to eyewitnesses, the flight lasted five seconds and they noticed only one flash - the process of meteorite collapse. Other Lensk residents said they heard the sound of him falling.
“The collision will be harmless and will likely cause a beautiful fireball in the skies over northern Siberia,” the European Space Agency previously warned.
The exact location of the asteroid impact is unknown. “Fortunately, the asteroid passed above the atmosphere. The life safety of the population has not been compromised. Residents of the Olekminsky and Lensky districts could observe a comet-like tail and flashes that night,” noted the Yakut department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Earlier, the International Meteor Organization reported that the fallen celestial body is the 11th asteroid that was discovered before it entered the Earth's atmosphere. It was noted that the probable site of the object’s fall is four hours from the site of the Tunguska meteorite’s fall.
The organization's press release also said that this was the fourth asteroid seen this year that was predicted to collide with Earth. One of them collided with the planet in September over the South Pacific Ocean, another flew over Berlin in January, and the third burned up over the Pacific Ocean in October.
