Cheap ancient carriage brought tens of thousands of dollars to the family in a year
An American family bought a 1909 railroad car for three thousand dollars and turned it into a popular vacation spot, earning more than $90,000 a year in rent. NBC writes about this.
Car number 306 ran on the Washington-Idaho-Montana route from 1909 to the 1950s. After that, it remained abandoned for several decades until it was noticed by the father of 27-year-old Isaac French, a resident of Idaho in the USA. The man went there and saw rotten walls and stray cats inside the carriage, but still decided that “something big could come out of this.”
In 2020, French's family bought the carriage for three thousand dollars and decided to move it to another piece of land with better views of the countryside. Transportation of the carriage and repair of the building cost 147 thousand US dollars. Costs included platform construction, renovations, landscaping and furniture purchases.
The family did most of the work themselves, attempting to restore the carriage to its original design. French said he painted the exterior walls of the carriage himself, based on an old photograph he found.
The family decided that they would rent out the restored carriage on the online platform for short-term private rental housing Airbnb. To make it livable, the carriage owners converted the passenger compartment into a living room, added a kitchenette and a gas stove. They also built a bathroom with a barn door and converted a former railroad car mailroom into a bedroom with a king-size bed.

“Our guests are delighted. They wake up in the morning to stunning panoramic views of the countryside. It really is an amazing place to sleep,” says French.
To enhance the guest experience, they also added a mirrored sauna, hot tub, and fireplace right outside.
“The idea was to reflect the surrounding nature. We have beautiful pine trees and a stunning view, so we thought it would be an interesting mix of new and old era,” French said.
It is noted that the cost of living in a restored 1909 train car ranges from $325 to $350 per night.
