“Violence.net”*: almost a quarter of murders in Russia are committed in families

Every ten minutes a violent crime is committed in one of the Russian families. These statistics are provided by the Violence.net Center in its report on the situation with domestic violence in Russia.

Human rights activists analyzed the available Ministry of Internal Affairs statistics on violent crimes and came to the conclusion that about 21–23.9% of all pre-investigated murders in Russia were committed within the family. In 2023, there were about 1,200 such cases, in the first half of 2024 - about 650. Every year there are an average of 1,200 cases where women die at the hands of loved ones.

First of all, the wives of the aggressors suffer from domestic violence, followed by relatives who are neither wives nor daughters. Sons and daughters suffer from domestic violence at approximately equal rates.

As the Violence.Net Center notes, the majority of Russians (consistently more than 75%) consider domestic violence unacceptable. In public opinion polls over the years, respondents more often oppose the decriminalization of beatings and favor the adoption of a law on the prevention of domestic violence.

• In 2017, Putin signed a law decriminalizing domestic violence. At the same time, the article “Beatings” was removed from the Criminal Code, and administrative liability was introduced for domestic violence. Criminal liability may arise in the event of a repeated offense - after conviction under an administrative article.
