In Japan, a US Army soldier serving at a US military base in Okinawa Prefecture was sentenced to five years in prison. He was found guilty of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a girl under 16 years old. The South China Morning Post writes about this.
As the court found, 25-year-old Brennon Washington, who was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, met the victim girl in a park in the village of Yomitan. He invited her into the car and then drove her to his off-base apartment, where he sexually assaulted her despite knowing she was under 16.

Brennon himself did not admit his guilt. The crime was committed back in December 2023, but it became known only in the summer of 2024 from a report in one of the local media.
This sparked protests from residents of the prefecture and its government against the deployment of US troops in Okinawa. In turn, the Japanese government decided to renegotiate information-sharing agreements with local governments, promising to notify municipalities of any crimes allegedly committed by U.S. military personnel “without exception.”

Under current Japanese law, sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years of age is illegal, regardless of consent. The exception is when a person between the ages of 13 and 15 has consensual sexual intercourse with a person who is no more than five years older than him.
