Memorial member Bakhrom Khamroev was sent to a punishment cell for calling himself a political prisoner during the prosecutor's visit to the Vladimir Central prison

The administration of federal prison No. 2, known as Vladimir Central, sent the imprisoned Memorial member Bakhrom Khamroev to a punishment cell for 15 days. As his wife Zukhra writes on Facebook, the reason for the penalty is that Khamroev called himself a political prisoner during the prosecutor’s visit.

The human rights activist will remain in the punishment cell until December 28. According to his wife, in the first three days of the penalty - from December 13 to 16 - Khamroev was deprived of vital anti-insulin drugs. In addition, the jailers removed the batteries from the human rights activist’s glucometer and tonometer. Medicines began to be handed over only after the persistent request of the prison nurse.

Bakhrom Khamroev has been helping labor emigrants in Russia defend their rights for 30 years, collaborating with Memorial and Civic Assistance. On February 24, 2022, he was detained, the court sentenced him to 13 years and nine months in prison on charges of justifying terrorism and participating in terrorist activities.

The last time he was placed in a punishment cell was in February 2024 - “for violating the dress code” during illness.
