In 2024, hackers stole cryptocurrencies totaling $2.2 billion as a result of hacking online platforms and blockchain projects. Such data was presented by the analytical company Chainalysis. The amounts stolen in this way increased by 21% compared to last year.
However, they are significantly less than the record figure of 2022 - then hackers stole $3.7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies. In 2021, they managed to steal $3.3 billion.
The number of major thefts of this kind increased by 7.4% compared to 2023, amounting to 303 cases.
The authors of the report note that in the first half of the year, the amounts stolen by hackers almost doubled (by 84%), amounting to $1.6 billion. However, in the second half of the year, the number of thefts and stolen amounts were significantly less. Chainalysis notes a significant increase in the activity of North Korean hackers: according to company analysts, they stole $1.3 billion (an increase of 102%) during 47 attacks. Thus, they account for 61% of all cryptocurrencies stolen during the year.
